I'm heading out to the West Coast of the US in a few weeks and want to squeeze in some golf when out there. Going to LA, Scottsdale, Vegas, San Francisco, Monterey and San Diego

So I'm asking for some advice on what to do when over there, for playing a course which is good but affordable, any particularly good shops to have a look in, advice for visiting any of the more exclusive courses, like Pebble, Whisper Rock, TPC Scottsdale or any others you would recommend.

Plus anything else you would say to do when out there

All advice welcome, thanks

I went to LA and San Diego last year. In LA we played at Goose Creek which was excellent value money and was around an hour from Hermosa Beach. It was a nice lay out around 50 dollars but you had to pay extra for range balls and a buggy but it was still a reasonable price. When in San Diego we played at Maderas which is run by the Troon company. We played it when they had just done work to the greens so had a discounted rate of 80 dollars but I think its usually around 110. It was good course with great practice facilities, the food in the clubhouse was also top notch. If you played them you won't go too far wrong but there is plenty of choice in those areas.

Stayed at the Wynn in Vegas earlier in the year, enquired about the cost of playing, hoping it would be discounted as jan and I was in the hotel. Was still $500 so needless to say I didn't play at the Wynn.

Don't think there is much else in Vegas, certainly not on the strip.

Really depends on your budget in the LA area. As already said, Goose Creek is a really nice course and was good value for money. The further you look inland the further your money will go. If you want to stay close to LA then you are going to be paying anything $100 upwards for a really nice course. Some courses close to LA that are nice are Pelican Hills and Strawberry Farms.

Pelican Hill is surely quite a bit more than $100?

It's a stunning location, about an hour south of LA. We stayed nearby in Newport Beach.

Best place I found to get reasonably priced tee times was golfnow.com.

If you go to venues that have more than one course, quite a few in Scottsdale area, check the replay rates onsite when you play the first course, you can often get some really good deals for a round on the other course.

Round that area you will pay at least $50 to play anywhere. I just thought I would mention those 2 as they are beautiful courses if he has the budget. For a bargain game of golf the best I found was The Navy Golf Course at Seal Beach

In Vegas I played wolf and snow mountain, one of them was great and the other was crap, but I can't remember which was which, I'll find out for you if you want?? They are about a 30 min drive from the strip. I also played Royal links which is about 15/20 from the strip, it's a mock up of holes from famous golf courses, it was a good fun golf course. On the strip there's the Wynn and ballyhai, we wanted to plan ballyhai but it was closed for overseeding. Played with a guy that played both the Wynn and shadow creek and he said neither were worth the extortionate green fees..

I done the LA/Vegas/San Diego/San Francisco trip a few years ago. Wasn't a fan of LA, it's massive and everything is miles apart, bit dirty too. We stayed near the Hollywood walk of fame as we weren't driving and all the buses left from graumans.
I wouldn't be in a rush to go back there. Vegas is pretty awesome, just the normal Vegas stuff, iv been back 4 times to here, it rocks. we just done the beach stuff in San Diego as it's pretty chilled out place.
San Francisco is a cool city. Definitely do Alcatraz, we also done the open top bus tour over the Golden Gate Bridge, hop on hop off one, get off in the park and places like that. that was good. Avoid staying down at fishermans wharf as its howling of fish down there all,the time.
