I am driving up to Blair Atholl for a few days, arriving on the afternoon of the 17th September, staying until the morning of the 21st, and then driving over to St Andrews for the weekend, arriving Saturday morning late, and leaving Sunday pm. Mrs Mog is playing tennis, so it’s only me playing golf.
*
So, what courses are worth playing?
*
At Blair Atholl, there is a 9 hole course, and Pitlochry is right on the door step, and is supposed to be nice, so they are a given. There are a number of others fairly local, but which ones would you play?
*
At St Andrews, I guess the old course is out of the question, but which others are worth a shout, and possible to get a tee time on?

Yes - Pitlochry is a must. I was a member of Dunkeld & Birnam for some years but that was before it was made into 18 holes - but again I'd suggest it's worth playing as beautiful views and the 9 hole had some cracking holes - the new nine are over the Loch of the Lowes side in what was farmland - so not sure what they are like or how mature they are - but I'd still say go for it.

Taymouth Castle I enjoyed as well - again a nice course if not that challenging - with the hills towering up all around you. Aberfeldy is curious being so flat and you have the awesome blinking river Tay to cross (not play over) and play along side as well as the Birks Burn to play over. None of these are championship courses but they are just very, very pleasant to play.

Rosemount is close by but that is a different kettle of fish and cost altogether - a true championship course And a we bit further south Comrie is a lovely track - again it was 9 holes when I played it last - but beautiful location.

A wee detour needed, but Crieff Ferntower is worth making it for imo.

Of the St. Andrews courses, I've only played the Kittocks and the Dukes. Enjoyed both courses, but played The Kittocks in monsoon-like conditions, while the Dukes was soaking (it was in February though!). Loads of bunkers at the Dukes too, I think I was in most of them. :D

TOC is closed on a Sunday so if you do decide to (try to) play it, you'll need to do so on the Saturday.

The New and Jubilee are very good, I loved Kingsbarns if you want to push the boat out.

I've read that if you rock up at St. Andrews Old first thing in the morning as a single, the starter will try to get you a game with another group at some stage.
If it's possible to get on another course at short notice in case you can't get on, that's what I'd be doing.
