I need to get a bit fitter- by no means unfit but not being doing much else apart from golf in terms of exercise so really need to do more stuff.

Would like to kill 2 birds with one stone so would really look to work on the core muscles and flexibility needed in the golf swing- especially during the autumn/winter months where there is likely to be less golf getting played.

Are there any tailored gym programmes out there suited to golf training?

The range I use for practice and lessons - Clydeway Golf Performance Centre (Uddingston) have started fitness classes in conjunction with First Tee Fitness. They work on strength, power, stability and movement. Worth a look.

Failing that, I have enrolled in Pilates classes this year ( after months of physio on a bad back) to improve my core and mobility. Has deffo helped me swing the club better.

as said above good info from Titleist Performance Institute.

some good info on this site with a bunch of video on most topics this vid just one example

Just to add my 10 pence worth, I think any exercise is good exercise, if it's going to help your game and make it easier to walk round. I go the gym 4 times a week and I'm still knackered by the end of the round.

Probably one of the most useless videos I have had the pleasure of watching.
No disrespect coach.

You mention the 2 most important factors core and flexibility.
Just google them there will be hundreds

Deadlifts and squats.

Combine that with flexibility work and you'll be golden

I've been told that Deadlifts, squats, pull-ups, dips and press-ups are the basic exercises that will helps most things. Just vary how you do them.
ie, for press-ups: do them normally at first, then cross your ankles over, move onto incline, then explosive press-ups, and then move up to explosive incline press-ups.

think often times folks can have a tendency is to be a little ways one dimensional in their approach to ‘fitness’ for golf

higher index players will still get ‘fitter’, than sitting down mostly, if the exercise they do can also be targeted to the golf motion

for most index players the number one issue in swing motion difficulties is the inability to use the body to produce the correct sequence of motion
- correct sequencing is paramount in producing not only good solid ball striking but in producing clubhead speed certainly it’s more important than strength alone

exercise targeted at correct golf motion plus flexibility exercises will be more beneficial to the majority of index golfers - than muscle development regimes

a major issue that can be seen always through a large amount of golfers across the index spread is that the motion is heavily arms, hands & club dominated - the sole intent to swing these ‘fast’ & hit hard - it’s inefficient & it doesn’t work

the torso/chest for the majority being employed on a very limited basis plus the hips being used in too linear a motion - why with a large amount of golfers the hips are still square to the target line at impact with any left hip ‘clearance’ being made is after the strike - no real ground pressure work no real rotational work being done
so any ‘speed’ has still been down to the arms & hands in mostly independent usage

you’d see the exercise in the vid being done on a regular basis in differing forms - the one in the vid being the ‘easiest’ version - by virtually all of the tour & elite ams who do exercise on a regular basis - different ‘strengths’ of bands alone or on a machine attached to whatever weights to suit the users abilities with different body positions, different stance widths & shapes that add to the degree of exercise resistance & difficulty

20, 25, 30 reps being done in the correct ways & folks will find they have done a fair bunch of work - left hip flexers, glute, calf + torso, arms & chest will tell them that plus the resistance exercise form will highlight how the larger muscle groups should dominate the smaller in the sequence of motion

there’s a real good library of many different types of exercise on this site (though many other good sites around too) for whatever age group, strength or flexibility levels folks already have - bearing in mind the majority do none at all best to start off at a basic level & work up

most folks would be better to target hip flexers, hams, ankles, thoracic spine flexibility & rotator cuff mobility along with glute & scapula stability - core stability/strength & lateral lordosis flexibility (side bend) would come along with the development of the exercises done for the former list

im a member of TPI, but the trouble with it is there is soooooo much to choose from its hard to know what to start on and what's best. I think they should do a beginners/intermediate/advance work out programmes for players to be able choose to their ability/fitness.
