Just wondered what people's thoughts were with golf specific fitness training, flexibility, strength and conditioning etc.?

The Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) have instructors trained to physically screen you and address any weaknesses or limitations with your body and/or swing and work on those to either improve or limit the damage.

Are people bothered about this type of thing and would you pay for it?
I'm genuinely interested to hear what people think and if anybody has used them.

I've considered doing the TPI screening before but the guy closest to me £50 for it and not too sure if its worth it. Also he isn't on the TPI website so unsure whether he is actually certified to do it.

I think it would be good to see where you can improve movement wise to help your swing, I suppose it might highlight why you have certain swing flaws which would help.

As much as I'd like to improve my golf, it's a hobby and I find exercise boring so for me it's a step too far.

If you enjoy exercise then go for it, I'm sure it would be beneficial.

I really wanted to go for a TPI session and the instructor local got back to me when I enquired: When I explained my situation and that I couldn't afford to be a repeat customer he didn't email me back :-(

I just wanted a one off where they would do my screening then maybe create a plan for me but I guess much like PT's they are only interested in repeat business.

I might up my game and do a TPI screening and start doing a golf based workout.

Currently I do yoga, use my turbo trainer (too infrequently) and copy various workouts from TPI, Stenson, and loads of others.
I also do a few other sports and ride bikes etc.
I've gathered a database on YouTube of things they do and copy them at home. But not frequently enough.
Definitely makes a difference. But I have so many long term niggling injuries anyway...

What's holding you back then?

If you are a young whippersnapper who has aspirations to play to a high standard maybe this could be beneficial, being strong and flexible can only be good for you and it could help prevent injuries also.

I am into my general fitness and it really has helped me over the last year or so I certainly don't feel any tiredness during a round.
I have actually started doing lots of stretches of the hips as mine were so tight and I feel a lot better for it.

Being supple will definitely help.
There are so many videos on you-tube now covering everything you need so unless you want the personal touch I would prefer my lounge.

I'd not heard of this service although I'd be very interested. I know as a woman getting stronger is going to help me get to my best game. I got the book if the strength training regime Annika Sorensten used but I am sure it would be better to have something personalised to a part time amateur! Thanks for mentioning it.

Gregger - nothing holding me back. I'm into it and think it's hugely beneficial for any golfer.
It's the little things that matter in golf. Tiny in fact.
Any small improvement can help and I know from my experience that physical limitations do exactly that - limit you.

I've gone through the initial TPI assessment and I really found it helpful. It highlighted certain areas of weakness which I wouldn't have even considered. I had a follow up and now have set exercises to work on the weaknesses and plan to go back in a couple of months to take it to the next step up.

I would definitely recommed it if you if you plan on trying to improve your golf fitness but unsure where to start

I have had a couple of TPI screenings over the years, I initially got involved because the guy I had lessons with was TPI qualified. More recently I have had low back problems as well so want to understand what I need to do to ensure I stay injury free.

If you are keen to improve and spend money on lessons, I would say its definitely worth being screened as well to understand what body limitations you have.

I am sure there are people out there who will give you a screening and then some exercises to work through for a while before going back for another screening. I have never used them but heard some good things about Stronger Golf so that is worth considering.

True golf specific training in terms of velocity and movement patterns can be useful in certain situations with certain individuals, but in general it is a huge misconception.

From a physical point of view there is nothing particularly special about golf (tough sell in a golf forum I know!) it is force production from the ground through the body to the extremities at which point the force must be applied with some degree of control, from that point of view it is really no different from kicking a football, bowling in cricket, shooting in basketball, etc.

Golfers should typically therefore focus on improving general movement patterns and their ability to develop force. Once a general basis of conditioning has been built true golf specific training may become of value to an individual dependant on the volume of swings.

With regards to TPT and a TPI screen specifically it will show you in pretty broad strokes where you are lacking regards mobility and stability and does a great job of relating this to possible effects on the golf swing. It's enlightening and good information you can use to help develop a swing that suits your physical ability and create a fitness program that keeps you injury free etc. I would say it is worth paying for but then again I am probably bias (full disclosure: I make my living as a golf fitness professional).

I had a thought tonight after playing badly and my body was feeling sore. My swing was that off my body had no memory off it causing muscles to be used totally different and resulting in my aches and pains. Anybody else felt this after a bad round

I have lower back problems and doing this identified a lack of hip movement. Got a set of ongoing exercises which is really helping.
