I have just finished reading a article on fitness for golf ( based on tai chi) which promotes strength in our core muscles . Anyway I played 9 holes this afternoon and tried some of the exercises and I must admit I was a lot more centred as I struck the ball and will definitely try this again. Are there any of you good people of the forum doing anything to keep fit in the winter or intend to for the new year?

I did try some pilates last year to try and help core balance but truth be told I couldn't be asked. I'd rather hit the range. At my age and carting three hernias around I'm trying to make the best of what I have.

Have regular Pilates sessions and have my own stretches to keep my back lose after an old injury in my lower back.

Eating/drinking anything I please until Jan 4th (allows for sair heid + hangover) then it's a gradually introduced much stricter diet. Ultimately, no beer unless out for a reason, stop with the red bull every morning, and a lot less bread and sugar(irn bru in particular). But it's not going to happen overnight, starts with simple things like portion control and eating slower without filling up to bursting point, then introduce a little at a time.

Combined with a fitness and exercise regime which as well as helping the body should also help the wallet, we've got a couple of great hills round the corner and a mini gym in the shed so no excuses. Also getting back into badminton and football should help massively with stamina. One thing though, I'm not Villegas nor do I want to be.

The majority of golf fitness on the net is core stuff, but my main concern is flexibility as I only came to the game at 26 so my body's not used to the movement patterns that most have built into their bodies over a lifetime. Athletic golf training, golfgym and hansenfitness4golf are a few channels I look at on youtube for ideas

Good things to do are core compound exercises, like Press-ups, squats, plank, dips. Coupled with some good stretching, hamstrings and lower back are areas to focus on. A lot of lower back issues are due to tight hamstrings, and if there is one area the golf swing hits more than any is the hip/lower back area.

I'm doing grip exercises. I grip a pint glass of beer and raise it to my mouth, with about 10 reps. Doesn't improve my golf, but makes me feel better about it!

I'm having some personal training sessions over the winter.
Plenty of explosive muscle work for those fast twitch fibres, core work for stability and a lot of flexibility work.
I always thought I was quite flexible...I was wrong!!

I agree with you that the stretching plays a big part in how tight the hamstrings are and I do stretching exercises every day at least twice a day . And the best thing about it is you don't need ny special equipment.

Currently at day 25 of the 60 day Insanity programme and feel much stronger, more supple, more explosive power and am hitting the ball much further. Keep airmailing greens though as not yet recalibrated my clubs but getting in excess of my summer driver distances...

I have made a swing change but think most of the additional distance is due to the increased fast twitch muscle fibres the programme develops.

I'm seriously going to do some more of this because unlike other exercises I have done where you seem to strain muscles , this feels just right. Although the stretching might uncover muscles that I have forgotten about!!

I'm a good stone up in muscle over the last 18 months but only just starting to hit the ball further. I am convinced that muscle and exercise alone won't help, you need to train those muscles to work the correct way and that needs you to be making a swing.

How are you finding it Amanda?

I'm on day 4 and ache!!

I'm loving it but did hurt in the first week. In fact the fitness test had me sore the next day! What I have found is by Thursday I'm ready for a recovery day and by Sunday ready for a rest day. It doesn't feel like it gets easier though as the fitter you get the harder you work and it still kills...great fun though :-)
