is it normal to just not be able to play certain golf courses well?

I am a huge fan of Saunton, but every year I go down there and basically forget how to play golf. Literally embarrass myself. The practice round on Sunday I hit the ball solid but the event yesterday. I'm surprised they didn't ask me to leave

as a member @ burnham, I would say I'm pretty experienced on tough links golf now, but I have NEVER hit some of the shots I hit yesterday at Saunton.

It it must be mental as I've played so well this year so far. But yesterday shot +13 and NR (off of 3).

long way to drive for .2 each year!!

of course, everyone has off day, no matter what handicap they are.

Ive played 4 games in a row this weekend and yesterdays was by far the worst. Luckily it was a team game and we were not last;)

Its the weight of expectation esp after you have played a few rounds well. Also in the "ive played today" thread you usually only see good scores not the ones where they shoot 93, so it gives a perception that most are playing well consistently as they often miss out the fact they have bad round s now and again.

For me its Royal Dornoch, admittedly its in comps, but reg shoot high scores around there and find it soul destroying how hard t can be sometimes, esp if you are slightly off. best round i had in a comp was in a 36 holer 18 on each course. got cut around the Struie. Then Birdied the 1st and 2nd. didn't miss a fairway or green, but could not get the ball to the hole and 3 putted all the others:(

it wasn't windy by any chance was it? Saunton can be a beast when the wind gets up! Hitting driver into a 170 yard par 3 is not normal for most inland golfers.....

I hate show offs.......;)

Nizels in Kent is a course I just cannot get my head around.
Doesn't matter how well I have been playing, I go down there and my game just goes to pieces.
I normally play the 1st hole well, generally looking at par at worst, maybe a birdie...... it goes downhill from there.

css was +5 both rounds but it wasn't that windy. Maybe 2clubs. It was quite dry too so didn't play long at all.

i just hit so many bad shots.

Camberly Heath - played there 4 times now and best I have got is 30 points , no idea why

Never played well at Ogbourne Sam.... I think it's got too many desperately dull holes and a hard walk....probably in the wrong mind set before I get out of the car! Glad I don't need to go there since I moved out of Wiltshire!

So yes, it can happen!

Id rather not play golf than play there

Kirkcaldy Golf Club, course where I learned the game as a junior and still the only course I've broken scratch par (2 under 68 as a 16 year old off 7). Didn't play it for over 25 years due to being away in the Armed Forces and not playing for a long time, play it every year now in their open and really struggle for some reason, think my best in the last 5 years is a net 79

I know what you mean Sam, Saunton could give you some nightmares with tightening up and not been able to commit to a shot fully. I got away with quite a few shots yesterday with some very dodgy steering.

I have never played well at Beedles Lake, have a few decent holes then decide to have a car crash on selected holes. It owes me that course.

oooo Saunton Sands............playing there for three days in middle of May.....played alright the first day.....quite a few little traps everywhere and sneaky brooks/red stakes etc....for us it was the small par 3 'The Tiddler' that none of us could master and yet we always found the green on the 17th long par three.....that is golf I am afraid...........

Pennard. Rock hard rough strips (fairway doesn't paint the right image), most of which slope one way or the other. No reward for good shots, complete lottery. No enjoyment at all.
