Later this month I am looking for somewhere to play near the Rose Bowl in Southampton, I have to drop my son off as he is working at the test match, so thought It would be nice to play a round on a new course. I am staying nr Havant and have played several courses around that area so would prefer a course nearer Southampton, any recommendations appreciated.

Theres not that many that side of town without going out into the sticks a bit, the nearest to the Rose Bowl is probably Botley Park hotel or Meon Valley, which is an excellent course. Southampton City golf course itself is well worth a go, its essentially the old muni but has been taken over by a private company who have invested heavily in it, and its paying off. Also Paultons is another decent track, just off J2 of the M27.

As per prevoius reply, the old Southampton muni is a great course, I have fond memories of playing that when I used to work in Eastleigh. Also Paultons Park is good.

Yep, the muni is a really good testing layout, not played it for a few years so no idea of what condition it is currently in.

Private clubs:

Stoneham is a nice track in the summer, very undulating parkland/heathland course, hosted the Brabazon in the early 90's so definitely not a goat track.

Hockley just up the M3 is a hilly downland course. Used to be a member there, reasonable enough course but won't set the world on fire. Great views up on the top part of the course though.

Royal Winchester is quite similar, another undualting downland track just on the outskirts of the city.

South Winchester is an 'inland links', not really my cup of tea but a few people on here have played it and enjoyed it.

Romsey is pleasant, very short with driveable par 4's, suitable for shorter hitters.

My best suggestion though is to head the other way to my course, Hayling. Just the other side of Portsmouth, it really is a top quality proper links with fast greens, pot bunkers, bumpy fairways....the whole lot.

How about Stoneham? thats the best course around there? Hockley is also not too far away.

.

I played it a few weeks ago and it was in great nick, apart from the bit where they are doing the drainage work, which was still quite boggy in the valley. Fairly unsurpising though given the amount of rain we have had. The second hole is currently closed while they complete the work but you just play the second of the 9 hole course instead, so you don't actually lose anything. I'm playing there again in the morning, hopefully it should be dried right out by now.

Just back from the muni, second hole now back in play and course was in superb condition.
Also helps that I beat my mate 7+5 and had 8 gross birdie chances. Missed every one of them though...

Also try Dibden , in the new forest you have Hampworth and the courses at bramshaw , There is also a nice 9 hole at the Rose bowl , well it was when i played it in a South Today and Radio Solent Event years ago ...................always come down to Bournemouth area ........EYG
