I'm off to Perth with work on Sunday and have worked out I may be able to squeeze an afternoon/evening round in. So any recommendations for decent courses to play not far away form Perth?

Not looking for anything too posh or expensive, but a half decent course, and I'll have to hire some lefty clubs.

Cheers for that. Just tried Gleneagles to see if they could do a twilight deal, seeing as the forecast is not that great and all that. And it's £175 for a single golfer, which when I add club hire on would take me well over 200 notes. I'd kind of expect Paul McGinley to caddie for me at that price.:(

Murrayshall's ok, think they do a Monday offer for £25. No idea about club hire there though.

Booked the championship course for 25 notes on Sunday and they have lefties for hire, cheers for that recommendation. Did try King James, but they did not have any lefties to hire as they sold them last week as someone liked them so much they bought them!.

I'm going to play either the Kings or Queens at Gleneagles in a couple of weeks (20th I think) - twilight for a two ball is £160 (£80 each) - sadly no single twilight rate

So the rate after a certain time for a 2 ball is £15 cheaper than they want to charge for a single player:confused:

Seems daft to me, if they'd have quoted me say 80 notes I may have considered it as a one off experience. He said there were a few tee times left and the weather isn't forecast to be great, so I wouldn't have thought I'd be taking up the tee time and therefore revenue they could get from a 2 ball.

I was under the impression that golf was kind of for the people in Scotland. It's all very well having these courses in the top 50 lists etc etc, but when they make it financially very difficult to play them then you kind of wonder what the point is.

Oh well, Murrayshall gave me a good twilight rate and also I'll hopefully spend a bit on some food and drink in the bar with them, so they deserve my money. May be Gleneagles doesn't need it.

It's £65 a head for a twilight golf round at Gleneagles in a four ball.

Have you got a car available - Blairgowrie's two courses (especially the Rosemount) and just 15 miles away are much better than anything that's on offer nearer Perth and the three courses in the Alyth area are very decent too

Yes I do have a car and cheers for that. So just rang Blairgowrie to see if I could possibly get a round on The Rosemont on another day and they could not do enough for me. They said they currently didn't have a full set of lefty hire clubs but they would get some for me. And encouraged me to come along and the promised they'd get me out on the Rosemont if I turned up after 4pm, for 30 quid.

I see in the top 100 lists The Rosemont is actually better placed than a couple of the courses at Gleneagles anyway, for a fraction of the price. So top one Blairgowrie, you have restored my faith in golf being the game of the people in Scotland.

Welcome - played it a few years ago on one of our Scotland Hols. Seem to remember it was very nice. Although winning that day always makes the memories a bit rosier.

There's a second course there as well called The Lyndoch. Overall ok, but a few mickey mouse holes if memory serves (didn't win that day...)

Now that is good service! Isn't the recent Amateur champ from Blairgowie?

Played Murrayshall last year in a 4 ball, it's actually not a bad wee course nothing mind blowing, but has some nice holes. We all came off the course talking about how we would play certain holes differently if we came back so I suppose that was a good sign.

We got fed and watered before heading home, the burger was great.lol

Your right Bradley Neil new Amateur Champion plays at Blairgowrie, I played Rosemount this morning first time for a couple of weeks and noticed they are tightening the fairways and letting the rough grow in places for the upcoming junior Ryder Cup.

Course is in fantastic condition just now and he journey will be worth it, if I did not have the 125 years celebration game on the Sunday would have signed you on.

If you want to play courses that are "for the people" then there are plenty of decent municipal courses and not so famous private courses available at the sort of money you want spend. However, if you want to play courses on a complex which is holding the Ryder cup in a couple of months time then you need to be realistic in terms of how much you expect to be charged/expected to pay.

in terms of access to the more exclusive courses, those who are members of a golf club and have access to an SGU card can play some top courses (e.g Kingsbarns) for much less than the walk in ticket price.

I'm sure you'll enjoy Blairgowrie and glad they treated you well.

Top stuff Hacker - The Rosemount is probably my favourite inland course anywhere. I work in Perth and if I lived there as well I'd seeing about joining Blairgowrie - Is this a one off trip or are you up this way regularly with work?

To be honest I think anything over 70/80 quid to play a twilight round is a lot for just about any course. Don't really care if it is a Ryder Cup venue or not, from what I've read the course they are playing it on is a bit of a goat track compared to the rest at the complex, so I would have wanted to play one of the other courses anyway. Seems a shame if hosting the Ryder Cup means courses can charge silly prices and price a lot of keen golfers out of the market who would like to play them just once in their lifetime. Plus charging more for a single golfer than the combined costs of 2 is just stupid.

Kind of would have thought that they would have appreciated the revenue from a single golfer out of peak time who wont be holding anyone up, but hey ho, their choice. From what I've read The Rosemount is a better course (certainly than the Ryder Cup course) at a a fifth of the price, so I'm looking forwards to it.

Mostly a one off I'm afraid. Occasionally come up, but mostly in the winter so little chance of an after work round then.

Cheers for that, they did mention something was happening on the Sunday. I may well change my round to Blairgowrie on the Sunday after 4pm anyway and play the other on the Monday as I'll have more time on the Sunday, and may only get 9 in on the Monday. And from what I've read The Rosemount sounds a bit special so want to make sure I get the full 18 in.
