I've got an epic 300 mile trip to see the sister in law at the weekend. Not been there before. Are there any dirt cheap courses around that I could knock a ball around when I'm sick of the in-laws? :)

Where abouts are you going, i've never played up there but i'm aware theres a course just outside the village of Crook, I believe its called Crook Golf Course (aptly named) heard good things from a relative that lives in the village there. Also isn't Slaley Hall up that way in Northumberland

Could do worse than visiting sharpley, nice course and only 14 quid after 3pm on a weekend, only just over 20 otherwise just of the a19 near seaham.

Also high throston worth a look, Durham city, brancepeth and beamish are three better courses but wouldn't class as dirt cheap.

In Durham itself you have four courses.
Brancepeth which is a great course it's a couple of mile out the city. It's got a big ravine running through the middle of it and has got some great holes. It's more a members course though.
Also just out of the city is Durham city another parkland course with the river browney skirting four of the holes. Again its a members course.
You've then got the Ramside which has 27 holes and a driving range. This is about a mile from the city centre. This is a parkland as well. The original 1-18 are good 19-27 are nothing flash.
For a cheap course in the city you have got mount Oswald. I would think you would get on there no problem and it will be the cheapest of the four. The front 9 is ok but some of the holes on the back 9 are a bit up and down. It's ok if you just want to get away.
Personally I would play in this order 1,Brancepeth 2 Durham city, 3 Ramside 4 Mount Oswald.
Sharpley is a nice course as mentioned as well and should be easy to get on.
