how can i play competitive golf without being a club member ? i play at two of my local courses to a pretty high standard my best round is 2 under par on my local par 71 course which is 6300yds long and generally average about 71-75 but the waiting lists are 2 years plus any ideas ? also i have looked on quite a few websites for obtaining a handicap and was wondering if these handicaps are reconised by congu to enable me to play in open competitions?

You can join a society that will give you some competitive golf but i'm suprised that clubs have waiting lists these days. However you will need a handicap i think you can still get one through the english golf union by submitting three cards to them.If you say you are scoring in the seventys is that net or gross because clubs with waiting list will put you at the top if you are a low handicaper.

gross i have asked at both my local courses about becoming a member and also told them that i'm of useful ability but i was told that the waiting lists apply no matter what standard you play to

Ian if they are not willing to help you out as a single figure golfer move on, they are obviously up their own arses. Its an unwritten rule that golf clubs love single figure golfers as there arnt many about (% wise to total membership). I got into my club December '05 as a full member with no waiting as house or limited day membership as I played of 6, other fellas dd also get made up to full membership but they had been waiting a year as far as I am aware.
I have around 5 courses locally and if I didnt get in first time in one, I was prepared to go elsewhere.

Just been having a look at some courses round your area you lucky lad although none of them have any info about membership.courses looked at were Hartlepool,Castle Eden,High Throston and Seaton Carew did you contact all or any of these?

I can't believe a low h'cap player can't get in a club.
Around here, anyone can get in anywhere at the moment....that's the scene (sadly) that reflects the financial state of some clubs.
When I was looking in B'ham and played off an unremarkable 8 - 9, I had chances at most of the top courses.
Considering most queues are full of hackers and well-off folk, I think it should only be a matter of time before one is prepared to "get you in" near the top of the list.

You mentioned Seaton carew

i've heard great things about this course, (i live in Northallerton) haven't played it myself, the green fees are about 50 so i'm guessing the membership won't be cheap.
