Am about to do this for the first time - any words from the wise? hard case ? soft? or just rent clubs when i get there as the likely hood of them turning up unscathed is pretty slim!

Never done it but from previous threads if you are using a soft cover make sure you put in your bag something longer than your driver, like a broom handle, and pack the rest of the space with towels etc.

I use a soft case and wrap them well in bubble wrap around the heads and down the sides. You can get decent cases for around £50 if you shop around, the John Letters range at Direct Golf seem decent for the money, I'd be buying one of those if I had to replace my existing one.

Never had a problem but make sure you have them insured either on your home insurance or pay extra on your travel insurance.

A decent soft case should be fine but shove a length of cane (or broom handle) into your bag - just a bit longer than your longest club. For in case they come down the baggage ramp head first.

I use a Titleist Club Golf travel bag http://www.golfonline.co.uk/titleist-club-glove-xxl-travel-cover-2011-p-6935.html and have never had any bother. I use rubber head covers to protect my irons but that is all.
The only problems I have had with clubs on aeroplanes is if I have had to get a connecting flight through Heathrow or Gatwick. The clubs always miss the connection but always arrive on the next flight. Best to fly direct if you can!

I thought this thread was about a new Samual L Jackson film and some rogue Titleists.......

I have a soft case and always take a pencil bag to save on weight. Never had an issue as I thread a towel between the shafts and put the driver in updside down. Who are you flying with?

I use a plastic case £30 of ebay. never had a problem only £20 to take the clubs to Mexico a lot cheaper than hiring them.

A good soft case should be fine (MD Golf do a very good one). Put rain hood on & fill space round heads & exposed shafts with towels.

If its your first time what you using as evidence for your claim?

As stated wrap your clubs well in towels and or bubble wrap. Like Clive I use iron covers for added protection.

Throw in any excess always as mine have never been knocked back on weight.

Have often brought clubs , birmingham in october was the last time & never had any probs , i put my golf shoes standing up in the top of the bag up along my driver ,
Just remember to check your clubs before you leave the airport ,seemingly once you exit the airport you have no comeback on transit damage ..

I will say that the hard plastic cases are not handled well and are 'thrown' into the aircraft a lot. Also, there's more chance of those sliding off of the baggage cart onto the floor.

There are pros and cons for both but do as the guys here have said and you should be ok. Don't make it too heavy with extra balls etc. as the baggage handlers will not be happy and will throw them around more.

I'm looking to play abroad soon, so will hopefully take my own advice!

The Club Glove is an excellent travel bag and you should not have too many problems. I have taken clubs to the US and Spain/Portugal many times and have never had a club damaged. I had a pair of laser rangefinders nicked, though.

If you are bringing waterproofs, you can pack them around the club heads - likewise some laundry coming back.
