Hi Guys,

I haven't been playing golf long, started March this year, but am now really into it and play 2 or 3 times a week. I really do feel like my game has come on leaps and bounds.

I took up Golf because Snooker appears to be dieing of death in the area and generally, meaning i have struggled to play any high level opponents to make it worth while picking up my cue.

So i have turned to Golf :)

I booked my second block of 6 lessons last week, i now have a respectable complement of clubs. I have also booked off work Monday 11th Aug so i can stay up and watch the final round of the PGA Championship without having to worry about any work responsibilities.

It's fair to say i have now satisfied myself that this isn't just one of my 'whims' and I am now looking to join a club. I just want to make sure i join the right one!

I have been playing primarily at Mendip Spring 9 hole, and more recently have been out on the 18 hole a few times. This is where i have my lessons with the resident pro. But it is a fair drive (35 mins) on back roads to get there from the centre of town (Weston-super-Mare), where i live.

Worlebury looks stunning, although appears to be a smaller club, but i believe they are offering membership for <25 year olds at £200 for a limited period of time (I'm 24).

Weston-super-Mare Golf club appears to be quite exclusive, i haven't had a look around there.

Does anyone on here play in the North Somerset region and can offer any thoughts/ suggestions?

Thanks,

Steve

Hello Steve,

I used to be a member of Weston Golf Club and have played Worlebury as well.

Weston is a good club to join currently my friend is a resident member and enjoys playing the varied and active competitions Weston offer. The course as I'm sure you're aware is a links style less than around 10 metres from the beach.

It's protected by the dunes on the first few holes but opens up after towards, can be very difficult in windy conditions and when it rains there is no shelter.

Car park is a nightmare there, it's very small and finding a space is a lottery, clubhouse is very large. There is a large practice area and a putting practice area. The pro shop is well stocked with brand names. Weston never use temp tees and only when it's frosty they use temp greens.

Worlebury course in my opinion isn't as good as Weston (I prefer links style courses as a personal preference) However it's still an excellent course when I last played it was in tip top condition but the course crosses over different holes what can make it quite dangerous as times.

Parking is better at Worlebury more spaces than Weston, club house is a medium size and the pro shop is small but well stocked. Practice area is small and from what I could see it's for pitching and chipping only. Putting practice area is quite large. Worlebury in my opinion is more suited for the senior golfer, has a very big seniors scene. When I played there I didn't see any younger golfers.

I would suggest trying both courses before deciding. I recently played Brean GC what was very quiet, but I found the course as good as Weston.

Cheers,

James

Thanks for your post claz, much appreciated.

I plan to have a round this weekend at Worlebury with my Dad, and then hopefully at Weston next week.
