Hello everyone,

I am new to this site;

I am relocating to the Preston area and looking for a new golf club to join,
My current handicap is 3

I am aware there are many good clubs; I have been looking at Preston Golf Club, Fishwick Hall, Ashton and Lea and Leyland.

Really keen to hear any recommendations.

Thanks,
Liam

Preston is, by a distance, the best of those you've listed.

You know where you're going to be living?

I'm in Lytham, the other side of Preston is Chorley, Bolton, Bolton Old Links etc.

If you're moving into Preston that's a really nice club, course and range etc.

Preston is top notch. One of my favourite parkland courses. Really is a joy to play in the summer. Might be a big more of a slog in winter will The big hills.

Magic place to play golf. I'd join it in A heartbeat if I lived close by.

If you're in Preston itself, then Preston GC all day. If you're Blackburn side then Pleasington's a great course. Fairhaven or Green Drive if you're towards Lytham. Shaw Hill, Leyland or Chorley if you're on the southern side.

Personally I'd not even entertain Penwortham over any of those above.

Agree with all of this, good list of clubs.

A few of us in the NW are members at Fairhaven, Pleasington, Preston,Bolton (that I know of) so if you want a game at any sure it could be arranged.

Only played pleasington once but it is a fine track. That par 5 with the double level fairway is unique. The view behind the green is spectacular too.

Quirky but of one the best holes I've played. I would definitely have it in my dream 18. pretty sure you could go for glory over the hill if you pull your tee shot left and don't make it down the hill.

I am a member of Ashton and love the place , Preston is probably the best course but the cost to join is out of my price range (plus joining fee). We are a very welcome bunch at my club and that was one ic the reasons me and my wife joined!

penwortham we were made to feel very uncomfortable and fish wick does have issues with drainage but unsure if they have sorted this or not now!

if I was you give Dan our pro a call on tel:01772 20735282 as he might be able to explain our new offers etc!

As said earlier, Preston, Fairhaven, Pleasington and Bolton old links are cracking courses.

I've heard some good things about Penwortham, but havent played it.

Take up any offers from Gregbwfc, NWJocko and Qwerty if offered, for them courses, respectively. Good lads and good courses, don't bet against qwerty, bet against Jocko if he has shiny new clubs in his bag, bet against gregbwfc all day long. :whoo:

I would certainly agree with Preston, against Ashton and Penwortham, Apart from four holes on the first nine that seem to just go up and down it has a lot of great holes, I have played all 3 this year but I cant remember too much about the other too, except a couple of nice holes on the back nine at Penwortham. The holes at Ashton are a complete blank.

That said if you end up to the East of Preston then Pleasington is better than all the Preston clubs.

None of my clubs are shiny..... There's a fair chance the putter will be new though :whoo:

Hi Liam
Do you know which side of Preston you will moving to? Its quite a busy city and getting from once side to the other can be a real pain.
Ive only played Preston, Fishwick,Penwortham and Ashton & lea Once. All last year but from what I can remember..

Preston- Very impressive course, it would test your game week in week out. Lots of elevation changes on course and a Driving range on site.
Ashton- had a good day there, well kept course, seemed freindly. Some nice quirky holes, if on the doorstep don't rule out.
Fishwick- Goat Track!
Penwortham- Not really impressed, seemed a nice club & clubhouse, but off 3 I think you'd get bored.

I haven't played leyland but I know a lot of guys at chorley GC that used to be members. Very busy course apparently, also a stern test. Ive heard a lot of negative comments about the club though.

I suppose a lot depends on your budget, and I'd imagine playing Off 3 your going to want your course to be a decent test. I'd recommend if your north or central Preston then Preston GC would be a good move.
Or the option I'd take is 20 mins out to the coast, year round golf.. Fairhaven or St annes old links.

Alternatively, If your south of Preston, you would Get to Pleasington in around 15mins (probably similar to Preston ).
Well worth a look and playing off 3 would definately keep you interested.
I'm a member there. If you fancy a game and a look around just PM me and I'll happily show you round.

Qwerty is 100% spot on with the above post! Never played pleasington but Preston is the best kept/challenging course in the city.

We have had a few friends who have left Leyland to join us at Ashton but was too polite to ask why they did not enjoy it but they are more than happy with the move !

I would love to play around with you at Ashton but my handicap is really high and would not want to hold you back , however I don't mind showing you the ropes etc :) drop me a pm if you do!

Can't comment on the other courses in Preston as I haven't played them.
Am biased but Preston is a great course with decent facilities.
But would deffo recommend Fairhaven, St Annes Old Links and Pleasington depending on where you're living.
All superb tracks which I think have all been used for various Open qualifying rounds.
These 3 are also a fair bit longer than Preston so may challenge your handicap a bit more.

Just heard this week that Preston has some really good membership rates at the moment as well. No joining fee, 20% off 1st year green fees and 10% off the second.

All the offers are on it's website.

If you want a Preston course and cost isn't critical then go for Preston GC. None of the other Preston courses come close really. Ashton is OK, Penwortham is OK but no better than that. If you can go further afield then Pleasington all day long for me. Great variety of holes. Fairhaven? ....for me one of the most over-rated courses in the area.

I like Preston GC, a really enjoyable course.

And when you do move to the area, do feel free to join in on the north west meets and maybe consider joining in on the NWOOM which will enter it's third year this spring. There is always plenty golf available in the area.

You are one of a small handful of people ive heard say that and it really surprises me but it shows one mans meat is another mans poison.
