Hey Guys,

Ok i'm currently having lessons at west essex and am at the stage whereby i feel i can knock the ball around again (handicap was 13 before my extended break!) so i'm looking to join a club.

My current short list are -

Nazeing
West essex
North Weald
Weald Park Golf Club
Thorndon Park (although i'm not sure i would get in ;) - It's also a little far from where i live.. )
Coombe Wood

I'm looking for suggestions for which is the best course to join (i.e which is the best course..)? It doesn't have to be in that list, but i think i've listed the better clubs around here? My base is south woodford (e18 1jz) and want something within a 40 minute drive away. I would be looking to low teens/high singles by the end of the season.

Any suggestions/thoughts guys?

Thanks!

And which one of thse rural plots is in East London ?

I would suggest Lea Bredge Road pitch and putt

And after the round you can pop across the road and join the Saturday afternoon public ice skating

What's not to like

Hi Woosey,

I recently joined Langdon Hills www.golflangdon.co.uk which isn't a million miles from you, its got 3 loops of 9 so there's a bit of variation if you want it, in terms of membership it was in the middle bracket of the ones i looked at in terms of price.

Not played at any of the ones you've listed so can't comment on those.

I suppose it depends what you are after, just a round every week or social also? Do you want to play in lots of comps/meet new players? How important is the bar/catering etc. My opinions for what they are worth:

Nazeing: Played it twice, liked the course, layout a little quirky. Staff seemed pretty friendly. Not sure you would reach it inside 40mins, its a bit in the middle of nowhere?

West Essex: I like the course (if you can put up with the helicopters) but everyone there seems a bit snooty and ikt never felt like visitors were really welcome? Also, the clubhouse looks like it was built on a budget in the 70's.

North Weald: My home club so I am a little biased. I joined here on the basis that there were a ton of friendly people, have lots of comps and social roll ups and the course is a good test of short and long game. Plenty of money being invested in the course still and it is improving every year. Currently they are installing three new competition tees and are embarking on a project to re-build all of the bunkers. So there will be a little work going on this season but they are trying to get it done in as short a time as possible.

I have not played any of the others. I definately would want to try them myself a couple of times to get a feel before joining.

If you would like a round at North Weald at any time feel free to give me a shout.

Rob

Wanstead - I can never get my head round having to walk down a residential street to a seperate field to play 3 holes and then walking back again to play the rest of the course  Just feels weird.

Toot Hill - Nice, but probably another 10-15 minute drive once you are off of the M11.

Hi,

Ideally i'm looking to play a round most mornings before work (oh the joys of starting work at 11am!) and playing in comps.

I must say everyone at west essex (where i'm currently having lessons) have been really friendly!

My main concern is the course - i want it to be a good standard to test my game and make my handicap a 'true' handicap (my old course was the best in the area, playing other courses i found it easy to shot better than my handicap as the courses were so easy - straight, short, flat and no danger!) The problem i have seen with courses here is they are cramed in to as smaller space as possible leading to dangerous situations with fairways running next to eachother, tees that shoot over greens etc.

I agree i should get round to playing each course - i'm currently bringing my game back upto scratch so need to get out there! :)

If you want a good test and dont mind travelling a bit further then Bentley, near Brentwood will always keep you on your toes!

Thanks guys, i'll take a look at all of them tonight.

Only thing putting me off a couple is a joining fee - i'm not sure i'll still be living in london in 5 years - so don't want to be paying a joining fee :)

Thanks guys!

Hi Guys,

Anyone played Abridge? It looks pretty decent and isn't too expensive, downside is a waiting list, but hopefully i can get a rough time frame from them :)
