Golf clubs in Dorset

Hi everyone

im on holiday in Dorset for the week in July

hoping to play 3 rounds

any ideas?

The best in the area IMO are

Broadstone
PArkstone
Ferndown
Isle of Purbeck
Remedy Oak

However, plenty of people on here will be able to give you a better run down!

Do you have a budget in mind? Sam has listed all the best courses but they are not cheap!

I've lived and played in Dorset for 25 years so have a fair idea about lots of the clubs around, but it really does make a difference what you are looking for and where you are staying. Stick some details on here or drop me a PM if you want.

Bournemouth area definitely has the best choice, if you are further west then the choice becomes limited and the quality isn't quite as good either. There are a few Dorset golfers on here that might be able to help nearer the time.

Broadstone is on county card so that's worth investigating, especially if you are playing midweek when county card rounds are likely to be available.

Another option you should consider is Knighton Heath, not as good as the other courses mentioned but I would say it's the best of the rest in Dorset, plus it's pretty close to Bournemouth and on county card too.

Will be playing mid week

wanna play maybe one good course money no issue then maybe take on a couple of cheaper rounds £25-£30
Definitely one from broadstone, ferndown or parkstone. You can't go wrong with any of the above. Remedy oak is nice but not in the same league as the other 3. Unless you get on with a county card all will be a few quid.
Isle of purbeck is a pretty good option but won't fall into the £30 bracket.

East Dorset is worth a trip (the Dorset golf & country club or whatever it calls itself now) . Knighton Heath is short but good fun, but I've never found it very visitor friendly, it may have changed.
The best of the rest would be dudsbury especially in the summer, a bit further out, Ashley wood is alright, bridport and Lyme Regis are nearly in Devon but a good option if you're that way. One I've never played but heard good things is Sherborne but it's miles away from Bournemouth, if that's where you're staying.

I'd avoid the munis in Bournemouth. Queen's Park & meyrick, both could be good but conditioning and packs of rabid dogs spoil the experience.

After 2pm in the summer, Purbeck is £25! That is an Absolute steal!!

I am playing Broadstone, Ferndown and Parkstone in June. Really looking forward to the trip as I've not played any of them before.
Have played Remedy Oak. Didn't enjoy it. Very wet and claggy, and a few Mickey Mouse holes. Not one that I'd rush back to.

You haven't said where you are staying. If you are West, then Came Down above Dorchester is my favourite. Stunning views, course will be immaculate that time of year and a good challenge. If you are East then nobody has mentioned Barton on Sea - 27 holes on the cliff top, perhaps a bit flat but a good challenge. The 100 yard flick to the island green in front of the clubhouse is a treat when there's full bar.

Can't go wrong with the Parkstone/Broadstone/Ferndown three, but can be expensive. Isle of Purbeck will beat most courses anywhere for the views, but it's bit marmite. If the wind blows it's tough.

I'll be at Dudsbury by then - hit me up if you want and if I can get away from work I'll happily sign you in.

Having just returned from a three day trip to the area, I can vouch for the fact that Broadstone, Parkstone and Ferndown are all great tracks and I would return to any of those rather than play Remedy Oak again.
As a golf course, I think Broadstone just shaded it with it's variety of holes. But the greens are not good at the moment, which kind of took the gloss off it a little. Such a shame, because it really is a cracker of a course, laid out over terrific terrain. If the greens had been in as good a condition as the other two courses, it would be a no brainer for me, that's where I would be heading.
Parkstone and Ferndown were both superb too. Both in immaculate condition and a real treat to play. It would be very difficult for me to pick a favourite out of those two.
We played Ferndown off the back tees, which was fine for the two bigger hitters, but left quite a few very long approach shots for both myself and Richart. I enjoyed it, but think I would have preferred it more had we played from the yellows. It didn't help that we were following a big competition so the white tees had been moved back quite a bit, and the course was playing it's full length.
We played Parkstone off the yellows, which was much more enjoyable. A decent drive on most holes left you a reasonable chance of hitting the green with a mid iron. That's not to say it was easy, far from it.
But it gets a bit of a slog having to hit fairway woods or 4 irons into par 4's....
Over a 3 hour drive for me to get back down there, but I will be going again.
Three of the best courses I have played. And I've played some nice courses in my time.
Perfect three course itinerary.

Easily the best 3 courses in Dorset. Played them all lots over the years. Playing Broadstone in a few weeks in a league match so looking forward to that. Would defo be a member at one of those courses if i didn't live 35 miles away.

The three mentioned are all good tests, my personal order would be Parkstone, Broadstone, Ferndown. All are good but not cheap and get pretty busy. Remedy is also a great course but very expensive for visitors without a member introduction.

As far as value is concerned there are some great deals about - The Dorset offers some great deals and is in good nick at the moment. The next tier of Knighton, Dudsbury and Purbeck are all good tracks but not in the same league as the top 4 (incl Remedy). Normally easier to get on and won't break the bank.

Dorset has some quality courses but not the volume of somewhere like Kent or Surrey. As a result they get busy so you may have to shop around in the summer - especially at weekends.
