Does anyone have any experience of golf clubs in the Brighton area? I'm doing a masters at sussex and am thinking of joining either East Brighton Golf Club http://www.ebgc.co.uk/ or Brighton and Hove golf club http://www.brightonandhovegolf.co.uk as they both have discount student rates.

I've never been a member of a club before and would like to join one with a nice community. How can i tell which will be better?

Hi Superdan

I live just North of Brighton so I have played them all - I can summarise:

East Brighton - Easy to get to, central (just near the marina), good test of holes, greens always good, recommended.
B&H GC - 9-holer played from two sets of tees, very exposed, a fun Par 3 where you play to a green well below the tee - its 'OK' but my guess is that it would become boring very quickly.
West Hove GC - Just off the A27 going West (!) - expensive farmers field with a couple of decentish holes - avoid.
The Dyke - just up the road from B&HGC and similar to EBGC in type of holes, superior though IMO. That is where I would join albeit it is a bit 'snootier'.
Hollingbury GC - Cheap and linked with Waterhall GC (same company own them) Both courses are muni's so can get packed with duds, dog walkers and local chavs (Hollingbury) - Waterhall is poor with some proper joke holes.

I guess you want to stay in the Brighton catchment so I have not strayed further than that.

In summary, I would either choose EBGC or the Dyke if I were you.

thanks very much for that! I live a bit of lewes road so there are frequent buses i can take to the marina so i was leaning towards east brighton and life becomes really easy if they have lockers free. Somebody had recommended the Dyke to me but unfortunately being 24 i don't qualify for any of their education rates so membership is considerably more. I hadn't realised B&H was a 9-holer.

Thanks again!

No prob SD, if you qualify for the student rate at EBGC go for it (£195!!). I did notice the intermediate membership had a maximum age of 23 though?

The Dyke are doing a 6-month winter membership for £360 which I think is good value - but might be harder to get to without your own transport.

Either way they are both good courses in their own right.

If I lived closer, I would join East Brighton like a shot. Course is always in lovely condition, all of the members I have come across when I have visited have been really friendly and the guys in the pro shop are really helpful.
The only downside that I could see to playing there regularly would be the wind...bloody hell, when it blows it really does blow. And the drinks aren't cheap in the bar. But other than that, it would get the nod from me.

Who told you the drinks weren't cheap ?:D Agree that it is a lovely course, and it can blow a bit. Also seem to remember a few hills, but nothing I couldn't handle.
