called into the club this afternoon for a coffee and had a look at the notice board,a few weeks ago a notice had been put up asking those interested in playing for various teams to enter their names, the main team that plays in the national comps was listed and a 10 man team has a combined h/c of +22 made up of a +5 a +4 a few +2's and a scattering of +1's and a solitary scratch player,no problem in that BUT out of all of them only 3 ever play in our club comps the rest play in county comps one has been playing in the states one has just come back from playing in australia, they are all members but i wouldnt know them if i fell over them anyone else's teams picked like this.

I play in a few of our club teams, the rules of one tournament we play in states we must play the lowest handicappers available, so someone with a low handicap can put their name down even they though they haven't played for months and they will be picked.

+22.......... Christ!!! What club is that?

Thats some serious golfers there with those handicaps !

Wow!!!

They need to be careful though, if they are ever in a situation where a number of these lads are unavailable and have to ask "the hackers" off 1 or 2......they may get told to shove it where the sun don't shine.

If these guys are committed to a full season then fair dos - if they pick and choose......There may be trouble ahead......

Wow, where do you play mate?

I think its Ashton in makerfield
correct give the man a coconut,we have a lot of very low h/c players at the club in all ages,we have a couple in the FALDO tour thingy me jig and a few county players,i must add we have won the local clubs comp a few times in the past few years as well as some of the other comps but as they say a good course makes for good golfers, pity it hasnt worked for me.

Its hardly a club team if the geezers dont get involved at the club is it? I think the OP has a point.

Great we won the team league championship or whatever but nobody a the club knows the players? :D

While every club would love to field strong teams for smaller ones its a bit tough... I played for our club last season in Foursomes and thoroughly enjoyed the experience... So much so that this year i have put my name forward for The Jimmy Bruen team... Minimum combined handicap of 17 and the minimum single handicap of 6....

But iv also been asked to represent the Junior cup team which is singles matchplay from minimum 5 handicap usually to about 8 or 9.... Now the thing is and it was raised at the last meeting we had was that playing Junior Cup, players would need to hit the kind of form a week or 2 before it whereby they are playing 3 to 4 shots better than their handicap.... Now for someone thats only in Single figures a wet week the last thing i want to do is get my Backside handed to me buy a 16yr old thats playing out of his skin.....

I can understand Clubs wanting to field the strongest teams that they can... But on the flipside i think this should be made up of regular playing members also especially those that have a passion and desire and are willing to represent their club... Not someone who blows in every now and again and thinks that they are bigger than the club and that it should be the clubs delight that they have managed to get them to play in club colours.....

At my club we only have 2 team events, on is a four man team that plays in a matchplay competition against 7 other clubs and the other is an 8 man team that plays against the other local club.

Both events are scratch and we have a points system to pick the team. Qualifying starts with the first medal round of the season and every medal round after up to the club championship counts. Points are awarded to the top 5 gross scores each time, 5-1. In the 36 hole events the points are awarded to the top 10, 10-1 with a bonus 10 points if you win. Bonus points are also awarded through out the season to anyone shooting par or better. In the past the committee used to just pick the team but it was a bit of clique and your selection was based more on whether your face fitted rather than your golfing ability. I think the new system is better as it encourages people to play in the medals and rewards those who always turn up to play.
