Now, according to the latest edition of GM and the various adverts contained therein we, as a golfing collective, have no hope of playing to our best unless we have a bag that contains the very latest that TaylorMade/Titleist/Callaway, etc can offer. The aforementioned clubs must be custom fitted - anything else and we'll look like right wallys on the first tee.
So, on Sunday I shot my best ever round of 73 (1 over gross) and 42 points. Proper pleased I was.

"What were you using then, AW?" I hear you ask...

TM SLDR? Titleist 913? Callaway Apex irons?

Erm, no.

A TM Driver that's over 10 years old and was bought from JJB Sports.
A Callaway 2 wood that's 23 years old.
A 2 iron that's also 23 years old.
Irons that are 4 years old and Wilson Staff. Yes - WILSON STAFF!
Wedges that are 2 years old and a putter that I bought off my mate at the club.

None custom fitted except the Wilson irons.

Plus, the ball was a Titleist ProV1 that was three rounds old.

So, proof indeed that you can have all the gear in the world but it's the idiot holding them that really counts!

The only downside to the score was that I won't get cut.

So proof that you have done it once. Imagine what the results would be if you had new kit instead of all that old tat  ;)

congratulations on your score

not sure why you wanted to bring the club's into this though - you cannot seriously compare the known (what you did) with the unknown (what you might have done with different equipment). clearly if you had been at least professionally fitted for your tee height you would have played at least 1 shot better.......:)

What about your glove.....off the shelf or custom fit?

Well done , your achievement validates what I believe to be profoundly true; that regardless of equipment you can only be a good player if you have a good grip and your stance and swing are repeatable time after time. This goes hand in hand with good course management. You can have all the latest gear, but if all the other factors are not consistent then your shots will be wayward.

The kit may be old but the irons were C/F so there has to be some validity to all these claims the best way to get clubs to suit is via the C/F route and not off the shelf. To be honest once a driver is a year old, it has usually be usurped by a new offering either in a different range by the same manufacturer or by a rival announcing the latest all singing all dancing release. The length of some clubs do you a service. At the end of the day though top of the range out of the wrappers or candidates for the Antiques Roadshow the muppet holding them still has to hit the ball properly

Are all them clubs legal?

Anyone can have one great round, it's doing it consistently that matters. I'm not necessarily saying C/F is great or not, BTW.

Congrats on the great score.

Regrettably you used a titleist pro v1, allegedly THE best ball, therefore, null and void.

Let me know when you do it with a dunlop extreme distance, then I'll agree! :D

Is that the traction action ones

Their the ones OS. .... ridiculous bite on them.... their destroying balls on me but you can fire them all the way to the target around the greens.... a lot of grab on short Pitches and chips.... I cant wait to see What They'll be Like when the dry Weather kicks in.....

Their way nicer than vokeys..... Cheaper and nicer looking I think also....

Nice Irons;)

My bag wont change for a long long time...Couldnt be happier with them.

Try the TC wedges.... I bought 3 of them for 100 euro trade in with 3 Vokeys......The Vokeys wouldnt hold a candle to the Wilsons...

Have to agree that the FG tour is a great looking club. Still regret putting one of my playing partners on to an ex demo set for £250 rather than buying them myself.

Mind you the newly announced FG Tour 100s are even better looking if you can hit a blade

Got to be honest I think I prefer the fg62

Well done.

I love old gear. I currently use MX25s and MacGregor V-Foils. Both models must be around 9-10 years old. I think my GBB II fairways and heavenwood hybrid might be around 2005 -7 and my Callaway Hyper X driver is circa 2008. Got some nice Mizzy Tour Style wedges too. All in great nick (Macgregors were bought new old stock just a few years ago and been in storage til last summer). With winter greens I am using an old Dunlop Tad Moore TM-10 putter to save my new (3 year old) Scotty) :)

I prefer classic looking gear and I don't actually like the look of most new gear (especially anything with a plastic insert in the back or orange go faster stripes).

Well done you, but I am not sure why you think you have put one over the manufacturers. What did you use to make your score?

Anyway, big deal. Nobody said you can't play well with older equipment, simply that newer CF'd equipment offers benefits. The two are not mutually exclusive.

I was at a meeting in the US last year and had a day off for golf. I played with 2 guys who used 1920s hickory clubs and replica Haskell balls. One of them had a gross 2 over on a pretty decent course.

On a day when your swing is working well, you can use anything. But not every day is like that. It is a bit like safety devices on a car. Much better than they used to be but unnecessary until you crash.
