Ruislip Golf Club has apparent lost half its adult members and most of its junior members due to the plans to build the HS2 railway line across it, and another muni type club at Uxbridge is also under threat.

I wanted to join whittington heath. But despite hs2 they wont drop/reduce their £1200 joining fee. They lost money last Year too?????

Whittington Heath faces the prospect of losing nearly half its present course if HS2 proceeds. They have, however, taken the pragmatic step of identifying suitable land adjacent to the existing course that can be developed.

Tell us about it :(
when it goes through it will carve through 12 of the 18 holes and whats left wont be worth keeping

Our membership is good at the moment, partially because of an influx when Aylesbury Golf Centre at Bierton closed last spring,
But with the current uncertainty, the owners arent going to invest money in greens, drainage etc and so over the next couple of years i expect its going to start going downhill.

shame as its a nice little course, if a bit sparse on bunkers

The amount of roads, rivers, footpaths ,lakes, motorways, railways that are going to have to be moved to make way for HS2 is mindblowing

waste of money I say

Ruisip is a municipal, so they didn't have that many members anyway. A bit of a flat featureless track anyway. Might be improved by HS2.

Uxbridge lost 6 holes due to a new gas main about 6 years ago. the company that was supposed to restore them declared themselves bankrupt. They have struggled since. Not surprisingly. Shame, it used to be a nice enough course.

HS2 is the biggest waste of money

Spending billions just to cut a train journey by 12 mins !

that is my sort of impression too. They are ploughing through the countryside uprooting and unsettling peoples lives so that you can get to London a few minutes quicker......

I personally would prefer to see them invest money in trying to improve the road network in the UK.

It's a direct train as well - it's purely for people going from London to Birmingham and then onto Manchester and Leeds.

I'm still hoping it gets binned and the billions is spent on far more worthy causes

Iv played ruislip many, many times and although it help me out as a beginner I would imagine it would be losing members fast anyway as it so poorly looked after also it always seem to have some idiots playing it. I always felt bad for the guy collecting golf balls at the range as he only had a manual lawn mower sort of ball collector, how he is still alive I don't know :)

Although I say this it will be a great shame to see this course wiped off the map.

I might get shot here but these railways expanding is my line of work so being self employed it keeps me going for a long while it's just a shame it's going through all these great courses but hey I imagine this will be a repeat process over our lifetime and we will see it more than just the once.

I've played Ruislip a few times and although not a 'championship' style course I thought it was pleasant enough. Used to have a driving range, a nice clubhouse/function rooms and a decent shop. Don't know if this is still the case, but it's still a shame to lose it. Ditto Uxbridge. Both muni type golf courses within a few miles of each other, so good places for beginners.

No point in building an extra runway at Heathrow if you can't get to it because of traffic congestion on the M25, M3 and M4. Money would be better spent on improving the roads.

The firing squad will be round at dawn tomorrow! Seriously though, wouldn't you also get work if they upgrade the existing train lines. I also know from flying my glider around over Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire that there are a lot of disused railway lines there (thanks to Dr Beeching) that could be re-instated to give extra capacity with less impact on the environment.

Nope as I work on the foundations so if something only needs upgrading them I'm not involved :( you are right though as why can't they re-use existing track routes probably because just some gobody goop

But from where I am, it's about getting to Birmingham quicker, which is pointless?

Track will pass a couple of hundred yards from the new Aylesbury Parkway Station
Is it stopping? is it heck

So if I want to get to Birmingham by public transport I can catch the tube 20 miles into London, cross london and get HS2, OR I can drive/bus to Wycombe and pick up the EXISTING Chiltern Line to Snow Hill

And whats more HS2 isnt actually going to the centre of Birmingham, its stopping about 7 miles north east of the city, so you will have to catch a shuttle train to get you to the centre

And who wants to go to Birmingham anyway GRRRRR
