Next year I'm looking to change clubs, I've had enough of my current club being run by idiots and with glorified grass cutters as greenskeepers.

I've narrowed it down to 2 courses, neither are what you would call local.
One is 30 mins drive away and the other is just over an hours drive away (44 mile down the A1). The Further away being Gainsborough GC.

My question is for people that drive a good distance to their own club, does it become a chore to play golf or is it worth the travel to play at the club you love?

How often will you be playing ?

I wouldn't like to do a two hour round trip every time

Send a pm to wildrover about Gainsborough, he is a member there and will tell you what

You have loads of good courses near you, why do you want to drive so far for a game of golf.

Join a cheap course local then join woodhall spa as a country member for £500 a year if you want to travel and play a superb course.

Don't think I could justify the travel to be honest! What happens when you just want to pop up for 9 holes or something? An hour each way sounds crazy. Think of a long medal round plus a beer after then factor in 2 hours of driving and the whole day has just vanished.

I wouldn't fancy 2 hrs up and down the A1 every week maybe once a monthly to play Woodhall but as a home club not for me.
But good luck to you if you go for it.

Not sure I'd fancy that amount of travel time. I'm happy that I can nip to mine after work without too much trouble. Local, friendly and meets all my needs. I can also have a beer and get a cab (or the wife) nice and easily too

I'd definitely recommend going for the closer of the two.

I switched this year from my closest club (4-5 minutes door to door) to one that's a minimum of 25 minutes away. I absolutely love the new place and I don't regret the switch at all but 25 minutes is right on the limit. What I'm finding even at the 25 minute range is that I will only go over to play a full 18, as Evesdad says there's now never the temptation for an evening 9 as there was at the old place. Ask yourself how tempted you'll be to commit to a 2 hour round trip if you've got no game arranged and it's raining?
