Just heard from a friend who sits on his clubs board that they have done away with "dress standards".

For snelly this may horrify him. The reason being is that after discussion with their club lawyers they are scared of a lawsuit under the new equality laws and discrimination act. This was all started during the summer months when a gentleman member was asked to leave the bar due to wearing shorts. Under the clubs constitution they allowed women members to wear shorts in the clubhouse. This member took legal advice and informed the club that he had been discriminated against.

The club which shall remain nameless were not confident they would win any such court proceedings and were indeed advised by their lawyer that they most probably wouldn't win coupled with financial implications and bad press decided to back down. The club also looked into their get out clause of "bringing the club into disrepute" to get rid of this member and again the lawyer was adamant that the club would lose any future legal proceedings!

They have now published what they would like as a sensible dress standards.

Very interesting times ahead.

I know where your coming from mate, we still have dress code rules; no denim, trainers, shorts in the resturant and no shirt to be worn over the trousers ie not tucked in.

Seems a bit ott, but the average age at my place is 70 so no chance of a change anytime soon.
I like others just go with the flow as I knew the rules before I joined and am happy to adhere to them.
I do believe that the club misses out on people just dropping in for lunch etc, most people I know kick around in jeans when not golfing, but thats their choice I suppose.

what is the world coming to?are there no standards anymore?remember walking into clubhouse at fereneze one really hot saturday with a really nice smart pair of M&S dress shorts on+deck shoes, had to go out and put on black socks.them were were the rules so you obey!
but now? what the hell is going on??

Everyone has to be treated equally - simple as that.

I always questioned the dress code rule at work - in the height of summer, women can wear clothes that are probably more suited to the beach (get in there!! :)) whilst us men still had to wear shirt, tie and a suit. Why? If we're all equal then why can't men wear shorts, etc?

P.S. can someone not take this A£$S outside and have a Quiet Word with the plonker??
What is he trying to prove/do to the club?
Ah,Got it obviously working for the EEC...EHRC!!
God help us!"£

Totally agree with that. At my office in summer, the women wear what is basically shorts and a tee shirt but blokes have to wear a full suit and tie (and I even worked at places where short sleeved work shirts are frowned upon). I have asked whether we could at least wear smart chinos as opposed to a traditional wool suit but this has been turned down.

Isn't the equality act for workers? Who am I to question the clubs lawyer but surely every golf club in the country should now let all players wear frilly Knicks and a wonderbra whilst playing their early morning round...

Also if the club has a business reason which I guess it does and the dress code in written into the members contract which he must have read prior to joining and agreed to all the terms there shouldn't be a problem.

What if he signed the contract over ten years ago?

Many rules and laws have changed in ten years.

I have to be honest and a lot of this equality ruling has passed me by. Is it a private members club and if so wouldn't they still be free to apply their own rules in the same way there are still clubs that don't allow female members?

I've certainly not got the brains to be a lawyer however from my limited knowledge I don't think private members clubs are exempt from discrimination and equality laws.

All I know is that this golf club has backed down when it considered its options and had legal advice on the issue which rumbled on.

I'm sure there will be a legal eagle on here who can advise \ offer their wisdom.

craw when you say theyve done away with dress codes to what extent? does this mean like jeans and t shirts are allowed on their course? if so i would not be a happy bunny if i was a member of that club

Surely your must wear business dress? Does that mean you have to wear a wool suit?

And smart chinos? NO NO NO NO NO NO they do not exist !!!!!

My club has recently voted to change constitution due to equality laws, no longer have ladies and gents memberships, only adult full or midweek plus juniors and seniors, don't know how this will effect dress codes as women could enter main lounge with shorts and gents couldn't.

I remember that this principle was challenged a few years ago by a Civil Servant working for the DSS (I think). Women were allowed to wear more or less what they liked while men had to wear shirt and tie no matter the weather. He took them to court and won, I think on the basis that there was no equivalent dress code.

the law is the law. in theory. nb. am not legal eagle.

however the chap who got removed from the bar obviously has a point to prove and felt hard done by. personally i'm all for looking smart and respectable and think it's partof the game. however if the club handled the member in a particularly heavy fisted manner and/or made a public spectacle of him , i can understand that he may have felt he had a point to prove.

all sounds very handbaggy to me
