If you are only allowed to carry 14 clubs, then why are so many new golf bags being made with 14 club dividers AND a separate putter well?? Seems a bit senseless!

It may be the putter well may not be covered by the rain hood, and some lke myself would like to keep it kept as dry as possible in the rain.
It could also be used for your practise aids like alignment sticks, or that long extending ball catcher you keep for when you've put it over a fench or in the horrible stuff. That's what my spare slot is used for anyway

That depends on the manufacturer of the bag, but I would suspect that both would be able to fit a "fatso" grip.

I could have 30 dividers and my clubs would all end up in the same 3 or 4..

Seems to be the standard default for most cart bags these days. However most that have the external putter well don't seem to be wide enough for the fat grips so I guess the extra hole seems obligatory to accommodate these

My PP was looking to buy one in the pro shop today and I did warn him that it was the beginning of the end!
