Just about to start playing again after having the winter off to play football! I have started to train 5 days a week in the gym, have shifted a bit of fat and put on a bit of muscle, and would like to keep it! I know its not going to be possible to train and play effectively, so was wondering if anyone had a weight training programme they follwed during the golf season?

There's plenty of that sort of thing available around the Net.

Just don't go mad and bulk up. I know several Power Lifter type guys who are actually hampered for golf by the bulk of their upper bodies.

In Rugby Union terms, back row of scrum or Backs is the shape rather than Locks, Props and Hooker. Though some of the biceps on display at the weekend might get in the way too.
 
flexibility with a strong core is good for golf- muscle bound biceps and shoulders etc dont work as well imo
 
You cant loose fat and put on muscle at the same time. So first you need to set your goals ( massive and chubby or skinny and lean:D)

Training in the morning on an empty stomach also burns upto 8 times more fat than after eating. The guy i have lessons with hates my trianing programme and wants me to train everything on the back of my body more than the front by 3 times. Alot of folk say bigger muscles is counter productive to golf but as long as you stretch to stay flexible then bring it on

No one can make a genuine quote of 8 times as everyone is different. The figure of 8 times was given by the colgan institution USA that made its findings from a 5 year study with 150 participants . But i will say that the results with trianing first thing on an empty stomach is dramatic. However, it does take a special breed of nutter to be at the gym for 6am.
 
You body is either in a anabolic state or catabolic state. You can be in both at the same time

Not that this is the place to get into it, but I'd argue with carb cycling and something like IF, you can lose fat / build muscle over a period of time (effectively a recomp).

Ah 6am gym times, just getting back into these :)
 
I've been doing it the past few years now,the TPI site is really good and plenty of there videos on Youtube.

I tend to do 40 mins on a bike which is roughly 21 -22km and about 350-400 calories depending on how hard your pedalling also kettle bells are great and another all round cardio work out.

Vijay Singh has a few videos on You Tube i tried for a while have allow at them
 
I'm a lost cause. Getting into comfy middle age and with dodgy knees and three hernias I'm happy just to get round each week. I did look into the http://www.mytpi.com/ site a few years back. I am definitely thinking more along the line of pilates as the wife is getting into this on a very basic level

Good idea, you'll miss golf to start with but that'll pass ;)
 
Have a look at Joe Miller, long drive champion & personal trainer. At knocking on 18 or 19 stone he is a monster of a man, and more flexible than most people you'll ever meet.
He was asked at an open day I went to about being too big and he reckoned that people who talked about being too big for golf were talking rubbish.

I've been racking my brains to see if I can think of any really big muscle bound pro's on tour (not just toned and fit) but I'm struggling. Anyone think of good examples? Paul McGinley when he was younger looked a bit strong up top I suppose.

I think that flexible is the most important thing.

As for muscle bound how about Craig Parry's forearms, and, I don't suppose the Stadlers count?
