Played golf yesterday and was struggling to hit my usual distances and was having to club up a lot of the time.
I'm not a big gym user but over the last few months I have been going several times a week and found a huge benefit.
My point, well on Friday I did arms and chest, quite intense and more than normal and was quite stiff and sore yesterday also did 10 miles cycle in the morning before golf which I now know was silly.
Any gym users have any strategy for gym use around golf ? Thanks

I think aphibarnrat, the winner of the European tour event in China has a decent regime. Should be on YouTube somewhere..

What you've done JT is is alienated the rest of your body,i used to think getting bigger would be great for my golf by doing what you did, all that happens is your swing becomes very wooden with no flexibility or rotation. i went and saw a TPI instructor who put me on the right path and now i notice a big difference in my swing.

Thanks Steve.
I try to balanced, I'm also trying to drop weight as at 5'8 I was 15 stone, not a fatty lol but with a tough job etc I've always been stocky but recently the belly took over, new job sitting more lol.
I'm now below 14 stone and feel great but wondered if it was a better way to do it.
I know I'll not be doing chest and arms next Friday !! I usually run on a Friday but I pulled my groin few weeks back and I'm not back running yet.
Thanks again.

Carly Booth is a good case in point. 3 years ago she was playing great and won a couple of LET tournaments. Since then she seems to have dedicated herself to becoming 'Miss Universe' by spending hours in the gym, and now very rarely makes the cut. She hits the ball miles by the way, but seems to have lost her short game along the way. Golf is not all about strength!

No worries JT i would recommend going and see a TPI instructor if one in your area, the one i use is superb, they give you a full screening on so many things then give you exercises to do most of which can be done at home, biking is alas a great way to burn calories, I've saw in a few people that cycle the weight drop of them. Ive now realised that its not about size but being flexible as well as strong.

She is a very good case as well as posting some lovely selfies of herself:whistle:

Thanks for the input del. I'm training to do a tough mudder in June so need to up my fitness game but hoping to minimise the impact on golf. Before yesterday I've been hitting well. Just thinking there was a link with certain gym work and restrictions to my swing.
Cheers

Cheers Steve. I have a mate who is a tpi but he is in Newcastle but hopefully he can point to someone over here.
Cheers mate.

Oh and Carly booth selfies are canny :) very insightful!!

So I'm assuming you will also have: back day, legs etc. is there a reason why you went for this bodybuilding split? If you work an area hard you will most likely have muscle soreness the next day (especially near the start of a new prog).

Not fancy an upper/lower split where you can include more multi-joint exercises? Also include a rest day on Friday if you're golfing on Saturday.

Btw being bigger and stronger doesn't mean stiffer/wooden etc. Bloodsport was on telly the other night and Van Damme would disagree ha.

I had the same problem last week, and it really affected my swing. Doing chest and arm workouts before golf can be pretty tough. A long warm down after your session with plenty of stretching and then a long warm up in the morning before golf, preferably hitting plenty of balls before you go out should help. Otherwise Id suggest doing it on a thursday, giving yourself a day to recover and do your cardio stuff on the friday...

What's a TPI?

I was hoping to get wor lass interested in doing a Pilates class, but exercise is a four letter word to her.

I do some weights in my garage, but I balance that by doing lots of stretching as well.

Thanks folks. I did upper body shoulders etc but my arms and chest are what I noticed more. Mostly chest. I try to split it though the week, and I don't normally do upper body on Friday but unable to go running due to groin issue so gym was handy. Did not realise it would affect so much next day as normally I don't feel that bad. I think the right idea now then is to avoid the gym on a Friday lol
Cheers

My routine is Mon/Fri cardio, Tue-Thu gym. With the workouts in the middle of the week it has less disruption on the golf Sat/Sun.

I have the perfect gym routine for my golf

I drive past the gym on the way to the course and I drive past it on the way back home. I feel so much better than when I used to drive a different route
