I finished my "bag" this week with the purchase of a 5 wood.
Hooray.....although it did cost just under £800 in a year!
I added a 5 wood because it was always a club that got used quite a bit in the old days before rescues.
I felt there was too big a gap between my 20* hybrid and 15* 3 wood.
However, I was after something cheap and started looking around the pro shops and ranges. I found a Callaway Steelhead PLUS (RCH96 reg) at my range in little used condition with a brand new Big Bertha grip. I was not exactly desperate for it, as I'd broken a Warbird 3 wood that was replaced by Callaway for an original model Steelhead. It was ok (only) but never did it for me like the warbird.
However, I read a few reviews on the interweb for Steelhead plus and it seems a lot of folks rated it and a few said it was an improvement on the original.
I was undecided after 40 balls at the range, but bought it anyway (and t.b.h. it would have been rude not to, as the pro had just spent 1/2 hr with me fixing up the lie on my putter).

Anyway (shaggy dog story over) it is ABSOLUTELY CRACKING and I wanted to tip off anyone looking for a decent something-will-do-club-as-I-don't-need-it-very-often buy.
Awesome.....I've never hit any fairway wood so sweetly.....I thought my old S2H2 BB from 1994 (?) was good, but this is 3 rungs up the ladder. :)

So......anyone (still awake :)) want to vote for a classic old but GOLD club......we could really help the guys starting out who don't know the gems now forgotten. :)

Have to add a vote for the Steelhead + woods. Had a 3 and a 5 and if it wasn't for the fact I was nagged by HID to get rid of all my old clutter (the spare room was looking like an AG store cupboard) I would still have them. The 5 in particular with the small head compared with todays models was an absolute joy to hit.

The 3 with its smaller sweetspot was a bit tricky off the tee but boy when it was hit it would go for miles. More than once I've used it instead of a driver to lay up short of trouble only to cream it as far as the big dog and into the rubbish. The small head also made it brilliant off the fairway and I'd always have a go at the longer par 5's

This was one of the selling points for me. I'd also seen a Callaway Hawkeye vft 5 wood, which seemed a bit massive! Also, there was a Mizuno MP-001 Fairway Wood and a Ping ISI, but somehow, the Steelhead was like "coming home". Odd. :)

I have always thought that this would make a good section for the magazine, a retro section commenting on an older but classic bit of kit maybe even comparing it to a modern alternative. I appreciate that it would probably never happen as the advertisers would not be too keen on advocating the buying of classic clubs over the newer models but for newcomers to the game it would be great to read about some of the classics that can now be picked up for next to nothing.

I've got an old Tommy Armour 845 5 wood in the garage. It has a head the size of a fifty pence piece and when used off a nice lush fairway can still send the ball around 200yds. Don't make tham like that any more.

Isn't it odd.....some kit was just SO good, those of us that had it knew we were lucky.
Ram Zebra original.....yes, that's for sure......GM sent me one, sadly a new blade style....nothing like the stripey baby.
and as for Tommy Armour 845......had two sets of the irons; one set still in my shed and the other now belongs to another forumer (timevans). Lush.

Does anyone remember the Mizuno "Hot Metal" woods.....they were good. Titleist DCI irons.....not a looker, but quality performers.
I still rate the original Callaway Warbird soleplate metal woods as the dog's....

Came across a set of B51 blades from Slazenger recently. I use to play them for a bit as a junior and when I first became assistant pro as the local rep got me a tiny bit of sponsorship. They were a quality iron. Sailed forever when you got them right and vibrated your arms off if fractionally off centre.

Still got a steel shafted Callaway S2H2 driver. This was awesome when I first got it, but is now about as long as my 3 wood, and about the same size too. I still can't throw it away though.

I've still got my GBB driver (250cc) as well as S2H2/Big Bertha 5 wood and steelhead 3 wood. Shan't be parting with any of these, a bit like my Mitsubishi Estate car....worth more to me than the pennies I'd get for it.
Most are currently on "loan" to friends/mates
