Hi everyone,

This is my first post on the forum and I hope it's not a silly question. I have been golfing for around 18 months and haven't yet joined a club or have a handicap. Is it unusual to golf alone at an 18 hole course ? I only have a couple of friends who enjoy golf and rarely get opportunity to play together but I'm itching to play myself so wondered if it's frowned upon or considered strange to play alone ? Again apologies if this is a daft question.

Andy.

Hi Andy,

I really enjoy playing alone on a quiet night after work, a great way to relax, and you will probably find you play a bit better too!
Wouldn't like to play alone all of the time, but now and again it's great. If you join a Club you will be surprised at how quickly you meet others and start to get regular playing partners

I dont so much play 18 on my own, but very regular I play 9 on my playing 2 balls. A full rounds worth of shots in an hour and a half and I dont pester others on the course as I'm playing at the pace of a 2/3ball.

Hi Peter,

Thanks for replying. Joining a club is definitely something I'd like to do soon, perhaps next season after hopefully becoming more confident with the game this summer. Good to know that playing alone isn't something to be put off by, thanks again.

Based in Standish near Wigan.
I'm sure that I know someone from Wigan. :D
Where have you been playing? Haigh Hall? There's plenty on here who play all around the North West. A full range of handicaps and a great bunch of lads. I play at Houghwood near Billinge. Let me know if you fancy a knock sometime.

Oh, and I'm from Appley Bridge.

Played Haigh Hall a few times and Gathurst with a mate who's a member there. Playing Haigh Hall alone tomorrow afternoon(hence the thread), mainly been playing at Porters Wood 9 hole (next to vale royal) as it's not so daunting for a beginner like myself especially playing alone. Appreciate the offer and hopefully take you up on it !

Know Appley Bridge well, worked at the Waters Edge for a couple of years :D

Hi Andy,
I've been golfing about three years and fondly remember the days I played solo.
My concentration was good and I could knock a second ball without pressure.
But........ my mental state and confidence has improved dramatically through joining roll up sessions twice a week and by boldly writing my name on the comp sheets each week either solo or alongside others then turning up to play with two partners I didn't know.
I'm an "improving" high handicapper and have played many times with single handicappers and had a great time on the course and in the clubhouse. I even play for a club team.
The best thing by far that I ever did was to get "stuck in".
I can walk into our clubhouse and feel part of a club and I've found golfers in my club and in others to be uniquely sociable and supportive of each other.
Get stuck in.

hell welcome along and enjoy.
Plenty paly on there own downside if during the day at weekends means a long slow round but early morning and late evening it very enjoyable.
No need to wait and build your confidence if you fancy joining a club, find a good friendly one and they'll make you feel more than welcome and youll soon get to meet loads of new playing partners.

I absolutely hate playing alone and would rather go to the range. Most single players I've asked if they want to join my 2 or 3 ball have been happy to do so and I see nothing wrong in asking people whether there is a game available for a lone golfer, they can only say yes or no.

Played 9 on my own for the first time on Tuesday at my new club, was apprehensive at first but I really enjoyed it

Wouldn't do it all the time, but it's nice to know I can pop up for a quick 9 anytime I feel like without having to find a partner to go with

Oh, and I'm from Skem.

Theres loads from the north west off here so you always welcome for a game. Keep an eye out for posts in arrange a game section.

Beware of this lad from Skem though ;)

I enjoy all forms of golf especially when I have company. But I really enjoy going out for a round on my own to chill out. It's quite nice to work on parts of your game with no pressure. Wherever I have played on new courses you will very quickly get invited to the roll ups, comps, weekends away etc!

My my only recommendation is to check when
the course is busy, ie if there are four ball comps out etc, some courses will have this info via the web or you can just call the pro shop. You don't want to be at the tail end of 10 four balls, playing on your own!!!!!

Hi,

I am a lone golfer and a memeber of a club. my wife has joined with me but we seldom play together as the lady members have swooped her away. my club is friendly but I tend to go out alone pretty much every week for a couple of reasons:

1) It clears my mind after a tough week at work and I enjoy the freedom
2) Lack of confidence in my ability and feel preasured when playing with people I dont know ( I have a society trip to Dumfries in May with people I do not know and god knows how I will cope with that, really bricking it lol)

With that aside I still enter the medals and get paired with several members who are nice, friendly and I enjoy the company in the clubhouse afterwards. Have made loads of new friends since I have joined but due to me being a bit of a wall flower I shy away from joing up or asking them to play around with them :(

However on a side note we played Gathurst in a friendly match last year as we both celebrated 100 years old and found the club very welcoming and would recommend that as a nice club to join (if you do)

Also if you ever fancy a wee trip up to not so sunny Preston more than happy to enjoy a friendly round with you :)

Add another , play early morning or late on , you get to play millionaires golf , no chance of me going out at about 8 or 9 tho trying to meander your way thru 4balls is not much fun

In the summer I quite often play alone at the weekend: a month's worth of w/end golf will normally include 1 medal (3 ball), 1 social game (3 / 4 ball) and 2 solo rounds (normally at 07:00 ish so round the course in 2 1/2 hrs and back home by 10 so wife / kids get lie-in, I get golf every weekend => Result: everyone happy!
