I need to develop one something low that I can find the fairway with I'm going to speak to my coach about this

I only use my driver once or twice a round stick with my 3 wood mostly but I need to find something that I can use when things are a bit off or when the wind is up

So how many of you have a shot you can always rely on off the tee?

I have 5 clubs I can rely on from the tee; and use them for what they do rather than trying to use one of them for a range of shots.

Maybe I'm unusual but I find it a lot easier that way!

11 (age and body failures have seen it slide over the last 3 years from 8) - but the rebuild is showing signs right now :) I only dropped shots on 3 holes in yesterday's matchplay final...

you sound just like the 11 handicapper i played in matchplay recently. must be an easy games getting that many shots and being so good off the tee :)

as for me, my go to is a 3 iron or sometimes 4 iron, low draw. theyre as close as I have to reliable off the tee and even then somedays theyre not very reliable!

Yep - but it can be frustration and hell when you make almost perfect tee shots on all but the par 3s and then push an 8 iron never to be seen again. As seems to be the trend right now "I've found something" so we will just see if it's real!

Another problem is playing too many matches and not enough medal play; chuck in mixed matches as greensomes which distorts your natural selections off the tee, and senior ones where knocking it 60 yds past others can seem the easy target (when it's putts that really count long term) and you get into all sorts of bad habits - had 2 putts to win holes yesterday on 4 occassions; when you need to sink it the mindsets not there.

I need to get a low shot when I try the ball back a touch and easy swing I hit a high push :(

Moving the ball back increases the angle of attack which isn't conducive to low shots.

Much easier to slightly close your stance and leave everything else alone... cue coach for full explanation from someone who really knows!

hope what youve found works!!!!!

I know the feeling re too much matchplay, definitely had that this summer for sure, including playing mixed greensomes and hitting driver off tees id never dream of lol

Interesting question. Off 11 and clearly having been a far better level than that, why do you favour the 3 wood and not the driver. Where do you play? I think for many on here, including some of us around the same handicap level, is that we can still be inconsistent and so can't rely on any one shot

If you close your stance then you will probably just be swinging a bit slower which will keep the spin and the ball down.

When I need to keep the ball low then I try and deloft the club by keeping the hands a fraction forward at address and (hopefully!) keep them that way through to impact

Whilst I agree with you analysis I was more commenting on putting the ball back in his stance than a suggestion to keep the ball down.

If I want to keep the ball down in just use a driver (as already posted) - and not off the back foot!

I might use a 2h with a slightly closed stance if that looks better, but it's easier to hit a driver low than anything else (off the tee)

I can't seem to keep my driver low unless I top it about 100yds, regardless of what I try! If I need a low one into wind then the 3 wood comes out as I can keep that down with only a marginal loss of distance

Tbh I feel more confident off the tee with my 3 wood

My driver is go to for holes over 360 (380 if its tight), 3 wood if shorter. If its really tight its my hybrid or 4 iron.

I don't really have a go-to shot but I try to use the rule to allow me to hit the right shot off the tee. I do believe you can be too close, shots inside 100 can be fiddly if not a known distance. My wedges are 95 and 115 so I try and leave one of those, 100 is my current blind sput (still working on a shot for it) so I try to leave less or longer.

Added a 2 hybrid to my bag last year. 17# loft. Perfect for tee shots on short 4's where position is crucial and for long 3's. Shorter shaft than 3 or 5 wood gives a bit more control. In fact dropped my 3w to make room for it.

Still flies reasonably high though. If you want a low flight how about an old school 2 iron.

There has to be an absolutely compelling reason for me to take anything other than a Driver off the tee!

As for a 'go to' shot for the wind - just swing easier. If the shot is not a Driver then a half or 3/4 shot with 2 (or maybe 3) clubs more than the normal distance works fine - just like the low punch under trees or even! Key is to actually practice (and calibrate) that shot on the range or during a practice round so you know what works for you when the situation arises!

I used to have a 2-iron that stayed low, but that was a pretty specialist club that didn't see enough use to keep after returning from Scotland! Saw excellent use of a 1-iron yesterday though! Otherwise low loft hybrids are the way to go - for me!
