After reading the GM article on gender in golf, I have to agree. Taking gender out of golf, and allowing men and women to play off all tees, with more mixed comps, etc. can only be a good thing for participation and overall strength of the game.

Interested to hear others thoughts....

Ive not read the article, but I'm not sure there is much appitite from Women to join in mens comps.

Not at my club anyway, the ladies want a sep day to play and like playing with other women. we had a incident i witnessed this summer. We have a womens evening on our shot 9 hole course, they get about 20-30 ladies play in this. there was also a group of male members on the patio outside the back bar, as we had just played a 4 somes match against another club, so about 20 guys there. The ladies asked for the men to go inside as the women didn't want to be watched tee'ing off. no comments had been made and i don't think a single guy was even looking that way. in fact there were even a couple of the guys wives playing. The ladies all upped sticks and walked to the 2nd tee, which is out of sight.

an isolated indecent perhaps, but this sort of thing does not indicate to me women want to play with men.

Pretty much every comp at my club is mixed. It works fine.

We have had our yellow tees marked for a CSS for the ladies but I don't think they've played too many comps there. Our 3rd in particular has a 180 carry of an environmental area (OOB) and to be honest a lot struggle to make it. That's obviously a big negative. I'm all clubs being all inclusive but think the golf course is only one area a lot of clubs need to look at

From what I gather, it is much more common over here in Germany to have mixed competitions than it is in the UK. At our club, there is a weekly men's open on Wednesdays and a lady's open on Thursdays. But everything that is happening on the weekend is organized in a way that men and women can play together. There might still be separate rankings for men and women in some of the competitions, but they still play in mixed groups (but off separate tees, usually).

Our club is totally mixed, we have competitions where men, women and juniors all play together. It might be something to do with the relatively low member numbers playing on a course attached to an agricultural college but it makes for so very entertaining competitions when you get to play with a 16 year old and a retiree at the same time. Wildly different golf swings but aiming for the same result, get a little ball into a hole at the other end of the filed hitting it a few times as possible - then repeat.

I haven't read the article, so I'm not sure of the benefits of making a change. Are there any?
From what I've seen, the majority of ladies sections within clubs are quite tightly knit. They'll all meet up beforehand, have a drink and a chat etc..Why would the ladies want to break this up, as I'm presuming that the reasoning behind the idea is for integration on Comp Day (Otherwise What's the Point)
On the the whole I think you'd possibly find that although the Comps were mixed the groupings weren't.. Again, if this was the case What's the point?

We have a lot of mixed comps throughout the year, mostly social but there are a number of actual competitions as well. Men tend to play off the yellows and women off the red so not yet a totally integrated thing. I guess that will only come over time and if people push for it

We have a 8 ladies who have 7 day membership and they get 2 slots in the gents comp on a Saturday, however, they prefer to have their own competition. The 6 day lady members have their own competition on a Thursday.

I'm not sure mixed comps would work at our club purely due to the fact that the gents comps are over subscribed anyway and we often have several on a reserve list.

Starts on page 26

Ta, I just looked on the contents page for it.

I principal I think it is a good idea, however in practical terms I am not sure how it could work, unless it was introduced countrywide.

As a rule men hit the ball further than women, a par 4 for men would in some cases be a par 5 for women, so to play off the same tees there would need to be different pars on some holes from the same tee, this in itself defeats the object. You could re handicap everyone against the same tee but as the article says people would moan at that and the course would be too short for a lot of men and too long for a lot of women.

If you look at the 2 courses at Formby you can see how apart things are, Formby Golf Club have red tees, but the pars are based on men's distances and the course is over 6000 yards, I played it a couple of years ago and I found it very hard and I probably bit the ball further than the average woman golfer. Formby Ladies course on the other hand is far too short for a lot of men and although there is a separate SSS for men the pars are rated on ladies distances.

The best way to play mixed singles golf in my opinion is to use separate tees and make the appropriate handicap adjustments, it just needs more clubs to do this.

Same as ours plus it would be slooooooooooooow rounds. No thanks

No slower than playing with slow gentlemen and high handicap gentlemen. From experience a lot of women groups move a lot faster than gents. You get slow players in both sexes so a non argument in my opinion.

This is subconsciously making you think a different way, harking back to old times. Don't think of it as men or women competitions, they're just competitions. Anyone should be able to play (members obviously) . That's how a totally inclusive golf club should work. All our summer and winter 4ball knock outs are mixed and it works perfectly fine. There are some clubs out there who won't even let a woman mark your comp card or vice versa! Now that kind of crap has got to stop, it's nearly 2016!!!

we have about 3 mixed comps so Ive no issue about that, in fact i wish my wife wanted to play.

Id be interested in what a couple of the other ladies on here think, Esp Karren There does not seem to be much interest at my club though.

I quite often play with a lady county player who can hit the ball much further than I can! :(
