glastonbury

never even heard of most of the bands

you're kidding right? :D

Deadly serious Stevie!
Who the hell are the Vaccines! The Naked and Famous! Two Door Cinema Club! The Master Musicians of JouJouka!
Never heard of 'em.

I was more of a Monsters of Rock type in the 80's (showing my age now) I do try and keep up with music (kids do that for me!) However, I have to say as an old fart, some of last nights "music" was absolute pants!

Beyonce Headlining/Closing the festival - it's just not right

Too true. Pathetic. Absolutely pathetic. A total insult to the proper bands and real artists that have made festivals worthy.

U2 get Friday, Coldplay Saturday, Beyonce Sunday. Even mentioning that name in the same part of the cyber-universe as the other two is an embarrassment.

f.w.i.w. U2 made about £120m last year and avoided £15m in tax (to their home country) by basing their "company" in the Netherlands.
Only time will tell how much ends up going to causes around the globe. Not all the spare cash for now, would be my guess, but then look at Bill Gates?

Weren't Touch, Riot, April Wine, Saxon, Scorpions, Judas Priest and Rainbow playing at Glastonbury ? ;)The first Monsters of Rock line up, god it brings back memories.

I'd seriously much rather watch beyonce than u2 and coldplay. I can't stand any of the mundane toss they both make.

A friend once said coldplay is like lift music, you hear it but it's just pointless background music and i agree.

Anyway going back to my Stella and try find some decent music from Glastonbury.

Rant over :)

Elbow were bloody good tonight, proper tunes. Also enjoyed the couple of songs by Noah and the Whale.

I used to like U2 and still do list the Joshua Tree as one of my fav albums but they are a bunch of nonces now. Coldplay are dull as dishwater, Beyonce I am sure will put on a damn good show and I bet all those there and onwatching on tv will come away from it having enjoyed it!!

Watching Coldplay at the mo and although i quite like a few of their songs they are quite samey and some are very forgettable. They need something lively to close up IMO - how about the Prodigy- best band i ever saw live!!

OK, Bono's a right cock, up his own arse, too opinionated and ought to give away some of HIS wedge instead of nagging everyone to give theirs away.
How do you know Bono doesn't give away some of his wedge, as you put it? I know the band have given €5 million to an Irish schools music project and I'm sure they've given away a lot more than that in private over the years. No doubt they'd get a slagging if they publicised every time they donated to charity.

I get fed up with all these people saying Bono's a hypocrite for being rich and still working to help Africa. By African standards, we're all rich. I don't recall him ever telling people to donate their own money (as several posters on this thread seem to think he does a lot). Most of his work involves e.g. persuading governments to drop the debts they're owed by African countries or pay for AIDS vaccines and so on.

Also, re. U2's tax situation...they do still pay tax, just at a lower rate in Holland than they would in Ireland. For many years Ireland had preferential tax rates for artists etc and plenty of writers and musicians moved there purely for tax purposes. No one was complaining then. Now the boot's on the other foot and everyone gets mad that U2 (in particular) are taking advantage of lower taxes in another country. Most of their money is earned outside Ireland anyway...and they still pay personal taxes at home. It's only the tax on overseas royalties that's paid in Holland now. I don't get why this is controversial...I mean who wouldn't reduce their tax bill if they could?!

I've just got back from Glastonbury and Coldplay were the best band there, incredible. U2 put on an amazing show, should have closed it on the Sunday instead of Beyonce I think.

Saw Mumford and Sons as well, and they were excellent. No gimmicks just the guys there with their guitars.

Never had a better shower though than the one I've just had!

it seems to be the cool thing to hate u2 and i just dont understand why. they are a top class band with many great songs. easily one of the best live bands ever and have been for the past 30 years. you dont have 30 years at the top of your game if your not quality

Well folks, I was not there.. I am old BUT the act for me was .....Janelle Monae!!

Pure, pure class was this lass!

Her backing band was also magic!!

This is not someone living off a past reputation but so new and exciting that the shivers ran down my back!

Have to stop now .. not allowed to get over excited at my age!

I don't think anyone disputed their musical ability - I think most people stated that Bono's a tool.

I wasn't going to say anything, but this really bothers me.

Why on earth is it an insult to let Beyonce headline on Sunday? :D :D I'm also puzzled as to why she's not a proper artist? Because she doesn't play an instrument? What a load of bawlocks. Her voice is her instrument. She has one of the most incredible voices to ever grace the world of music, writes all her own material and has produced some fine pop songs.

What's insulting is that people are so narrow minded about artists that don't play an instrument or aren't part of a band and just pass them off as manufactured crap.

It's not like they got las years X factor winner to headline FFS!

I'm just watching her set (Mrs has it on) and looks like the 150 thousand people are enjoying her closing the festival! And it's an absolutely blinding show to be honest!

Before you ask, im writing this as a massive fan of bands like Iron Maiden, Killswitch Engage and various other rock and metal bands, but I can also appreciate and like decent pop music.

To call I pathetic and disregard Beyonce as a 'real' artist is, in itself, pathetic. Glastonbury is and always has been about innovation, being different and offering the festival goers an experience. They're not afraid to pick headliners who might be a bit controversial but they do it for th betterment of the festival. Just like they did with Jay-Z a few years ago. Everyone was in uproar because a 'rapper' shouldn't be headlining a music festival. seemed to work out just fine!

Infect, having watched all the headlining sets, Beyonce's is the best by a long way. Coldplay were surprisingly good (I hate their bland, boring music normally) and U2 were as predictable and average as normal. I know it's cool to hate U2 but they really are a parody of their former selves and haven't released a really decent album in years (IMO).

/end rant
