How sad to see this iconic Rennie MacIntosh building destroyed by fire.
Thankfully all the students are safe.
Sadly some look as though they have lost four years of their work.

just saw the news- Tragedy!! utterly devastating to lose something like this.

Surely they had a water fire system to protect this unique building?

Because of its age the interior was mostly wood.
Two weeks after they opened the new building across the road.

Rumpo..have you been at the elderberry wine tonight.?

This kind of thing happens in England..No need for a thread for it.

What an ignorant reply

I've no doubt it does happen in England and I'm sure when it does there are certain people who are sad to see the destruction of a famous building, obviously not you though.

I wasn't aware there was a standard of what people can and can not start a thread about, could you list all the subjects we aren't allowed to discuss in this, the out of bounds section of the forum, just in case I feel the need to start one someday that doesn't meet with your approval. ;)

Absolute crying shame, to lose that much work is devastating but the news gave to believe that the building will probably never be saved

Stop getting your knickers in a twist...just my opinion.

Shame to lose iconic buildings and artwork - hopefully they can rescue some of the building

But thankfully no harm to human life happened

Can we not at least be civil and not throw insults about ?

Wheesht. The big boys are talking.

Well it certainly doesn't appear to be the mature boys.

Would expect better from a mod to show a good example as opposed to throwing insults towards posters on threads.

Anyway back to the OP

Some good news of sorts

@Byland1322: Fire Service say they retrieved 70% of the Glasgow School of Art contents. Incredible. @scotfire_west I salute you!

What? Are you really starting this as a England/Scotland thing? No need for a response like it. Kind of sad to see this response. England may have this kind of thing and it would equally deserve a thread. Really glad this isn't anything more than a loss of a building.

Why ? , is your upper lip stiffer than mine?

We are an online community and with the OOB section we are free to discuss pretty much anything , within reason and the rules.
The fact that a thread has been started shows that someone is concerned with it and we should respect that concern.

There is always the option NOT to reply.

Where such an event takes place is irrelevant ,but I'm glad nobody was hurt and they managed to salvage most of the contents.
As the dad of a (just finished) 2nd year fashion design student, I'd be very concerned if all her hard work went up in flames.

Saw it via twitter from Fish (the musician not forummer) yesterday and it was sad to see. Iconic building and apparently with some valuable stuff in there on top of all the stuff previous and current students have produced so a fantastic effort by the fire service to save the building and the majority of the contents and happy that no one was hurt

90% of building is stable and fine - and much has been recovered. Cultural and historical disaster losing the library and North Gallery - but the building has been meticulously recorded so reconstructing what has been lost should be absolutely possible - and with Glasgow going to be chocka with tourists this summer for Commonwealth Games etc - plenty of opportunity to raise the money. I studied architecture at the Art School for a period so though very upset by the damage I'm hugely relieved at the news - could have been so much worse.
