First match in the knockout trophy this week and I'm giving away 11 shots.

I've never really given away that number of shots before.

Any thoughts, tips, pointers etc on strategy etc?

just play your own game I would say. If he is off 22 then theres a chance he will duff a few here and there, thats when you concentrate on hitting a good un to pile the pressure on. Also when you have the honour make sure you hit nice and straight, again putting the pressure on the oppo's drive :)

Shake hands on the first...!
I remember giving away 20 before now. On a short par 3 he stuck it 6 inches from the hole off the tee.
That'll be a hole-in-one for a half then...

I hate Matchplay..

Played a chap twice, giving him 25 shots each time. Won one, halved one. You just gotta play your own game, play solid, grind out the pars, and see which way the dice fall. The more you grind and hit solid shots the more he will most likely start going for shots he shouldnt, and gifting you holes, least thats the theory :)

It doesn't matter whether you're giving or receiving shots. Have confidence in your own game. If you don't back yourself no-one else will.

Apart from that just the usual matchplay advice of never take anything for granted, always expect your opponent to play the best shot he can, and don't lose holes to (nett) bogeys.

Good luck :)

I've got to do a similar thing this week - only 10 shots so it should be a piece of p*ss. As Region said though I won't take anything for granted and will play my shots and hope its good enough.

I can't control what my opponent does (have enough trouble controlling what I do) so I'll try not to let it affect my game.

Hopefully we'll both come out on top ;)

Play your own game. Expect him to make everything and just try and play as well as you can. The only thing you have control over is your own shot so there is no point worrying about what he might or might not do on each shot

I'm off 22 so it'd be like playing me then :)

I'd say play your game too as I'll be playing mine! I know you are going to be straighter than me and that I'm going to hit some damn awful shots. I'll slice a drive, duff a chip or two and miss the green right from 75 yards away.

When I do those things you need to make sure you are playing to your strengths and making me pay for my errors. I know I can play better you see but I just can never quite get it all in place at the same time!

I gave away 18 shots last week in a mixed match. It's not easy but you just have to play your own and wait for your oppo to make the mistakes his h'cap says he will and be there to take advantage.

Just remember that you only have to be 1 up after 18 holes to win. There will probably be holes you par and still lose but don't let it get to you, just put it behind you and play the next hole.

Just means that statistically your a better player than him. use it to your advantage and dont give him a chance, he will make errors, so take advantage.

I gave away 11 shots today. 11 and 9 to my opponents and 8 to my partner.

I thought we would lose for certain, but I just played my normal game and trusted in some freaky/math/karma/luck thing to save my bacon.

Hole after hole, I could see us getting battered and bruised with endless one-player-makes-bogey-with-a-shot shenanigans, but in reality it didn't happen.

In singles, don't worry about shots here and there. The better player will win unless you come up against a par/NR/par/NR/par/birdie/NR/par sort of player.

hes' 26 and your 12, theres a reason for these h/caps remember it on the Tee and in your head

classic example tonight we had our first round board comp 4bbb we were never infront and fell to 2 down 3 times during the game we were all square goining up the last guess who won yes us as we never gave up and that pi55ed them off

That's the bit that worries me as that was me when I was off a higher handicap and I would have hated playing someone like me.

Do not let the fact he has 11 shots on you get in your head, especially if he starts well. Just play your game, and it'll be fine. Allow his handicap to wind you up and it's game over!

Good luck!

I remember playing a winter league pairs match a few years ago,my partner had let me down last minute and i had to play alone.Whilst registering in the pro shop prior to teeing off,the assistant pro said " best of luck mate, you'll need it with those pair" i asked what he meant, and was told other people had questioned there handicaps after being on the other end of a severe hiding.
One guy was off 19 and his partner off 18,on the first hole (an uphill par 4 of 410yds) i hit what i thought was a good drive, into the first cut near the 150yd marker, whereupon the 18 handicapper pitched his drive in the centre of the fairway 30 yards past my ball !!!
Luckily for me,his driving was his strong point and the rest of his and his partners game clearly warranted the high handicaps, but i do admit to thinking i was giving too many shots away at the start. So just play your own game and try and remember why your giving so many shots away,at some point there wheels will come off,no matter how well they may play the first few holes.

Yes. Well said.

As long as he's not a complete bandit it shouldn't be a problem. Had similar at the weekend, though not as many as 11 and early on i thought I was in for a hiding. Off 22 he's going to be three off the tee, maybe 3 or four times, he'll also, without warning, hit 3 or 4 complete clangers to gift you a hole. So if you play moderately well, you could already be 8 shots up, the other 3 you take care of with your own brilliance. If it's nip and tuck going down the last few holes, not having a basic repeatable swing is going to heap the pressure on his game. When you buy him a drink in the clubhouse you'll be thinking you should have given hm 14 shots.
Job done.
