hello,,,a friend got me into golf about 4 months ago Ive watched utube clips & read books & magazines played golf about 4 /5 times a week

Ive joined the club & I'm a 17 handicap

the pro-coach was watching me swing away on the range & said my grip was wrong so i payed him for 30min season he changed 3 things my grip,,my stance ,,& taking the club back ..

it all felt weird at first but it will take time for it to feel right ,,i will say one thing though at the range Ive used pw--7iron--3wood & when my shots feel right these changes have added 25/35 yrds distance on my shots with these clubs so fare

lots of practice this winter so i should be ready for summer

I'm not sure what realistic goal i should set myself

what sort of handicap do you think i should be by the end of the summer

i would like a goal to aim for any advise would be great :fore:

Do not set yourself a long term goal that may not be achievable. Set smaller decreases that you think you can achieve so you will not get disheartened if you do not make them.

None of us have seen you swing so have no idea what chance you have of even getting a cut. You make go up so be prepared.

If your 17 after playing for only 4 months there is no limit to your goals. How can you tell at the range your 3 wood is going 30 yards farther?

17 after 4 months is cracking. I'm only 19.2 after 7 months and I've played before! Mmmm, does that tell me something I wonder? Does it tell me that I am crap? lol.

Serious though, just don't rush things and don't set targets too high, high yes, but realistic. Maybe ask the Pro what he thinks you should be able to achieve next season.

I would suggest because you are new to the game, take regular lessons always work on your set up, alignment is a big thing. Practice more on bunker play, chipping and putting. This way you have the basics in place and you will get more enjoyment out of the game and you will improve quicker too. Don't worry about handicap just yet.

OK thank you,,,what I'm doing at the minute is i like to practice by myself in the week so if i play a bad shot i drop another ball if there is a group in front i will play 2/3 balls for the practice if there is a group behind me i will join them if asked i just like to practice in the week & play at least one competition at weekends,, before the coach did the changes i was aiming for the target but my setup was way left of target so there was problems thats what i got used to, but i am eager to practice what Ive learned

the problem is the coach says there is alot to work on

How old are you? If you are a youngster then don't worry it'll come into place as you get older and stronger as long as you get the basics right and get yourself a solid short game. I find setting targets a bit of a double edged sword. They are great as a focus at the start of the season but become a bit of a millstone if you don't have the success you hoped for.

I wanted to go from 11 towards single figures in 2010 but have ended up back at 13. On the plus side I had some success at the GM events and played well at forum meets as wel as picking up a win and a few top threes at my club. Its a balancing act between success on the course, and that definitely includes making sure you enjoy it, and trying to reach your goal. My advice would be have lessons, work hard and practice and when you go out and play let the good scores tak ecare of the handicap targets itself

The important thing is to have some lessons and get the basics ingrained. At the start of your golfing odyssey you have a blank canvass and no ingrained faults to blight your game. Get everything as solid as you can now and it'll see you in good stead for the rest of your golfing days. You sound like me and not afraid to put some hard work in and you only get out what you put into anything in my book so hopefully you can go as low as you want next year. I would think 17-12 is very achievable. Where do you play?

hi,,,Ive found this great club in huithwaite nottinghamshire it called brighley forest its not the best but for the money 420 a year the greens are great & its close to mansfield were i live ,,Ive played at other local courses & there alot more open so i can really let fly with confidence

the pro coach is Tim Leah witch Ive just started getting lessons from still practicing what Ive changed not expecting quick change bout Ive notice my accuracy is straight at flag most time

don't normally score when i practice ,,but today i did & scored 90 over 18 hole,, holed & counted every-shoot to get a true score so i can look back next year to see were i was when i changed my grip, stance ,,& swing
