After much deliberation I have finally ordered a new set of irons. Have bought Mizuno MP4 (6-PW) and Mizuno MP15 (4&5irons). Custom fitted of course. My current set have lasted me 25 years, so the new ones have a lot to live up to.

Part of me is expecting immediate improvement, but I realise that it may take a little while to get used to the different head weight, stiff shafts, longer shafts etc.

How long has it taken you to get used to a new sets of irons?

Will read replies with interest as my new clubs arrive Monday and I'm expecting to be off-form for about 2 months (but I've no idea what I'm basing that on, just preparing for the worst I guess)

None whatsoever for me, from ball 1 the Orkas just felt right and there was no transition period at all, getting yardages right the only small issue

2 rounds for me, once I got used to the lower ball flight and extra distance.

I changed my irons about a month ago. Gone back to Pings (i25's).
I love the look of them but am struggling with them at the moment as they are lofted differently from my old Cobra S3's and I am continually coming up short.
I am now stupidly trying to force them a little more than usual in an effort to get what distance I had back, instead of just accepting it and taking one more club than usual.
I've only played 3 rounds with them though, and the first of those was in hissing rain, so even my Cobra's wouldn't have worked that day!
It will sink it eventually, but until it does, I'm easy pickings for a quick tenner.

25 years is very impressive. I don't think any of the clubs in my bag have been there 25 months!

I hope you enjoy them as much as you clearly did, the current set.

Yeah, 25 years is seriously good going. I've just got new irons, and can see them staying in the bag for a number of years, but there's no way it'll be anywhere near that long, they'll do well to still be in the bag in 5 years time. I'm obsessed with shiny new equipment too much for them to last longer than that.

If they've been fitted then the only real "getting used to" should be the difference in flight/distance compared to your last set.
A couple of rounds and you should be knocking down pins from 180 out..!

I hope you are right and I am really looking forward to it. There is always going to be a difference between the range/ the fitting process and getting them out on the course, but I have hit the new irons really nicely on the range.

This for me ^.

If I didn't hit new irons at least as well as my old ones at a fitting, I wouldn't buy them.

I certainly agree with that and was definitely hitting it better with both the demos on the range and then separately in the fitting.

I would have thought The MP4 will be much easier to hit that what you had so no reason why you should be hitting them well straight away. You obviously though the MP15 were OK.

I was think of having 4,5,6 in those until i had a real hit with them. But i found them to be most un Mizuno like, i could have been hitting any club, so going for the full set of MP4 now.

'getting used to' in your context I would say and hope is immediate. You obviously hit them better than your current set at the fitting or you wouldnt have bought them. 'getting comfortable' with the look, feel etc comes with time. Same way it takes time to get comfortable with a new car but you dont drive that new car worse until you get used to it- am I making sense?

I expect immediate results from a lesson and new clubs. If it has to take months then you must be changing something in your swing to accommodate the clubs, and it should be the other way around.

I also went to new clubs (Titleist AP1's) from a very old set in the Springtime. The biggest difference apart from distances, which one can adjust pretty fast, to was the forgiveness of the modern clubs - and that benefit comes straight off. Wee half and quarter shots take a bit longer to get the feel of, but I felt within a month I could sadly no longer blame the new shineys for my poor play. :(

I tried a few clubs from each set and much preferred the 6 & 7 irons in the MP 4, but I found the MP15 4 iron quite a bit easier to hit than the MP4 4 iron.

Couldn't really comment on the MP15 being un-mizuno like as I haven't hit too many of its predecessors. The MP4s are stunning though.

I personally think that if you have to "get used" to new clubs you've probably bought the wrong clubs. If it's a matter of calibrating distances a couple of hours on the course or practice ground with a rangefinder should be enough.
