How often do you get up and down (make par) from a greenside bunker or even a fairway bunker?

Had an interesting game on Saturday, where i went in a fair few bunkers, but still mad par.
fairway on 1st, Greenside bunker on the par 3, 6th and again made par. Again on 13th and 14th and 18th for birdie

I don't think ive ever managed that before!!!

Not very often. I did get up and down out of a bunker on the 9th on Saturday, the problem was, it was my 2nd bunker shot

As we don't have many bunkers it's tricky to be accurate.
Generally, there's only 1 that I frequent, and not that often.
Greenside on our 6th and, more often than not, I'll get up and down.
But I think I only went in that bunker 4 or 5 times last year.....

Greenside I get up and down pretty regularly. I use my lob wedge opened up and trust to my swing speed for distance.

130+ yds out though and I can get too greedy and not get out first time before picking my sand wedge out and taking my medicine :)

Green side bunkers I expect to get up and down at least 70% of the time but not sure about fairways bunkers.

I seem to do better from a greenside bunker than a greenside chip usually. Find it easier to commit to the shot and stop the ball from the bunker.

I aim for 50% as this is a great return for an amateur golfer imo, my figure will be lower than that but im happy if I hit 50%.

If I remember right tour pros only get up and down around 60% from (all) bunkers so will be interested to see what the forum pros do :D

Holed one from 20 yards out of a greenside bunker last Wednesday for a rare birdie :D but more often its out with two putts about 2/3rds of the time with one putt the rest

Although the term up & down doesn't automatically mean I've saved par, it could easily mean its up & down to to save a double bogey :p

Not that often. I would guess around 35-40% from greenside bunkers. I am getting better but at my level, get it out on the green first time and two putt. If you put it close and make a sand save then happy days. I did get caught in the trap (no pun intended) of trying to be too precise and get it too close and leaving it in there regularly. The one I hate though is when you do the correct thing and set up properly, hit a decent shot, execute well and it shoots through because there is no sand under the ball and the bounce hits the bottom of the bunker. That does make getting up and down a lottery and happens a lot at our place at the moment

Up and down 32% of the time last year, which for me is unprecedented. Bunker play is by far the weakest part of my game and I usually only get up and down around 1 out of 4/5 times. Getting better this last year or so but should practice it MUCH more in all honesty.. Would like to blame our poor bunkers but it's no excuse whatsoever - same for everyone. Having said that, love playing out of the sand on good quality courses

pretty much sums it up for me. I fear the flyer sometimes. it can be more destructive than the leading edge getting stuck in and ball just about popping out!

flag 10 yards away. ill have a darn good go and getting up and down. flag 20 yards away. not so much! :(

I know its take more club and put the same swing on but the results don't match up.

I agree.gif

The problem at our club level is the inconsistency of bunkers, we can attempt to play our shots consistently but the quality and amount of sand from bunker to bunker will no doubt hamper that.

I'm happy to be out 1st time for a chip & putt or on the green for a 2 putt, anything better than that is a Brucie, after all, I was in a hazard and hopefully threatening the green in regulation :mmm:

Not only that but we tend to short side ourselves too!

We only have about 18 bunkers on the whole course, and they're generally in really nasty spots so you're happy just to have a putt for par!

Bunker play is the achilles heel of my play at the moment. I haven't been able to practice Bunker shots for nearly a year now as it causes more damage to the elbow when the sand is wet (and in the NW, it's alway wet). I tend to find myself aiming away from them now.... Although, the only bunker I've been in over the last week was at Silloth, and I got up and down from that.. So I'm claiming 100% :D

Although in reality it would probably be closer to 10-20%
