This will probably seem like a really daft question but will I have to start at 28? For example if the first three rounds I play and hand in are all say +22 would that be my starting point?

They'll take the best of your 3 cards - adjusted to no worse than a double-bogey on any hole - and that'll be your mark. It'll be based on SSS not par although these may be the same.
So if SSS is 70 and you come in with gross(adjusted) 98 then you'll get 28.

But if by some miracle my adjusted cards are quite low e.g. 22 for each round. Would they give me a starting handicap of 22 or deduct 0.4 for each stroke under 28 I had hit? If they did the latter my actual starting handicap would be 20.6! The whole thing is very confusing...

...or if it was gradiated i.e. first card comes off handicap adjusted second card comes off etc it would be 23.2!!!

No
First handicap is based on your first 3 cards only and the best of thses counts.
So if you shot 105 gross but an adjusted 95 - ie 5 quaduple bogeys for instance - then your handicap would be 25 on SSS 70.
Because the quadruples - can be 7 on a par 3, 8 on a 4 etc etc - count as doubles for handicapping your adjusted score is what they look at.
Fragger's got his now. his best card was 100 gross but his handicap is 26 once they'd taken the triples and quads as doubles.
I'd say don't worry about it. Get your cards in and let the computer tell you what your mark is and then get it down from there.

I agree with Matt. Far better to put your cards in on the full length course. I'm not 100% sure you can do it on temporaries anyway. I wouldn't worry too much about the starting point and if you manage to start lower then so much the better. Whatever they give you it'll rounded to an exact number e.g. 26.0

just watch when you put in your cards, may be temp greens and a shorter course so you could end up with a lower handicap than you think

My thoughts exactly

Please, please, please wait for the full course and white tee competitions before handing in your 3 cards.

Too long and too painful a story......

I could be wrong, but I thought you had to have a handicap before playing in a club competition. :D
You do! But at mine, you join up with 2 or 3 ball to have someone mark your card. This CAN be done outside of a comp, but it's preferred at mine to play the same course as a comp.

It's quite common to be asked by a newbie to join in a group for a h'cap card.

Ok so
1. I need a handicap to play in club comps
2. The club may allow me to do this by joining an existing three ball
3. I must make sure I play off the white tees with proper greens
4. The computer will sort it out but a disaster hole or two won't destroy my round as they'll count as DB

thanks guys really helpful. I had planned on starting playing on the yellows but I may as well start on the whites so I don't have to worry about changing up and down.

You can get a handicap from the yellows at some clubs. The SSS will be a little lower (generally) and the course a little shorter but at the moment that takes into account the lack of run on the ball.
Best thing is to check with the club. They'll advise the best way to go. Our Yellow tees are only 88 yrds different from the Whites and SSS is the same.

I'm in the same boat as you are tiger.

I have just joined a club a few weeks ago and need to put my cards in. I was told i dont have to put 3 cards in before playing comps as they can give me a provisional h/c of 28 so i can start playing comps straight away but i would rather put the cards in and see what i get. If i get 28 then so be it just the quicker it will come down or so that is my hope.
