Played my last round on wednesday with my bro in law before coming away with work. I have been struggling with my driver recently, forming a bit of a hook, made more annoying because driver has always been my best club! Anyway, there it was again, and after playing out/playing 3 off the tee I struggled to 45 at the turn, probably should have been more the way I was hitting it!
Annoyed, I put my driver in the bag and promised to hit only irons for the rest of the round - bloody hell!! :D
Never really hit long irons off the tee, but was hitting my 3 iron 200/220 yds right down the middle every time! Ended up posting a 39 back nine, even though I was giving up distance off the tee.
Has anybody else had a similar experience/put the driver away when it doesn't work, or are you more like me, too stubborn to change and persevere for a stinking score?

I'll not use it if its not working but I'll go to my 4 wood. At the end of the day its all about getting the ball in the hole and if you can score by using a 3 iron off every par 4 or 5 then more power to your elbow Sir!!!!

I have played round using a 3 hybrid quite alot on tight driving courses. It doesn't seem to affect my scoring.

220 in winter conditions sounds long way with a 3i. You must be a powerful ball striker.

Must be a good 200 yard carry with a 3 ironin this weather. If you can hit like that, how the hell do you struggle with a driver? That is some serious power.

Out of curiosity how far do you drive?

I just acquired this today....!!

So, my irons are now MacGregor V-foil 455 3 iron. MacGregor V-foil 565 4-PW and MacGregor V-Foil SW......just the GW needed now!

I'm planning to use this off the tee a lot!!!

Between 270-300 yds with the big stick, playing partner is usually 10yds ahead of me! I don't have a clue where I'm going wrong with it though, will be getting on camera with the pro when I return home. It's more of an intermittent fault, but recently it's been in my head as I stand on the tee, so until my confidence returns I think I'll stick with the 3 iron :D

Apart from checking the basics like grip and ball position it may be that you are getting the club a little trapped behind you on the way through and having to compensate with your hands to try and square it up. It is a problem I have suffered with on regular occasions and it really is best served with a lesson from a pro.

On the plus side if you are hitting the fairway and that long with a long iron there isn't too much wrong overall with your swing. I have to say I am driving the ball pretty well lately as ademac and HTL found out today and more often than not if I hit a few bad ones I'll try and block them out and treat each shot separately. If I start hooking every shot then I'll just try and minimise the damage and get it round as best I can but I won't consider not taking a club on a hole as it sends negative messages that you don't believe you are going to hit it well. I'll always play the club for the shot.

I had same problem 007. Was constantly hooking my drives. after a bit of time spent with my pro he strengthened my grip and slowed down my backswing, (with a slight pause at top) and also slowed down my downswing. Apparantly I was swinging to fast and not in sync with the club.

When i'm not feeling that confident or am aiming for a tight fairway I use my 5 wood off the tee I can still hit a fair amount of g.i.r using this club, but just need to club up on the rest of my shots.

rofl... Must be the thin air up there then...lol. Nice one. Can say I'm a bit envious of the part of the world you live in.

Did use my irons and 3 wood only for the back nine once.

Only reason being I snapped the shaft in my driver on 10th tee lol.

i got my driver regripped this week & the following round i was very consistent with it.

You can still hit it far in winter with the right ball.
