Just heard on the news Gerrard is to retire from playing, good to hear Klopp say the door will always be open for him at Liverpool, and I hope he goes on to coach and manage Liverpool.

One of the best players in Europe for many years just a pity England didn't always get the best out of him, for such a great player England perhaps should have built the team around him more.

With such a shortage of good England managers it's a shame more players don't seem to go on to coach and manage, more should be made of their experance, always remember Bobby Moore ending up doing radio commentary, what a way to treat a England captain who won the World Cup.

Hope Gerrard gets his chance.

Didn't we have enough of the Gerrard love fest when he left Liverpool?

Not sure that Bobby Moore was hard done by.
Did he try & get into management?

Linekar isn't doing too bad for himself,he's got it a lot easier than any manager imo.

I think over the summer he will complete all his licenses required and then join the staff starting working with Inglethorpe and the youngsters working his way - think working with Klopp will be a perfect way to learn but got to be careful not to get too ahead because we know plenty of top players have bombed as managers , certainly think he has the right temperament.

I think the point being made was that we as a footballing nation do not nurture our top players in to coaching and management.

Is there a structure in place for a player after he retires, where he can be identified and encouraged to go into coaching and management? I suspect not.

Players now choose to go into media rather than management as it is an easier life. Their choice. I heard Henry Winter on the radio this afternoon saying that rather than Gerrard go into management at a lower level why don't the FA employ him and other equivalents to coach at St Georges Park. They can work with the various England youth teams, the full team when together. They could do drop in sessions at clubs with the agreement of the clubs and their managers. Effectively elite retired footballers acting as coaches on behalf of the FA. They can pass on their skills without feeling as though they are always on the edge of the sack. One of the group could then move through, as per Germany, to manage the national team as and when.

Im a Spurs supporter and can appreciate what a player he was and stated I hoped he goes into management.

Moore did go into mangment and ended up at Southend, he always wanted to stay in football at some level.

Cant see what Linekar has any relevance to what I said.

Gutted he has gone, was hoping he would help us win one more title at City. 😁

Joking aside, hope he can make it as a coach. It's not guaranteed though, we have had both Keegan and Pearce at City. They were both players who you wanted to succeed, but both were Rammel for city.
That aside if he don't try he won't know.

Because poor old Linekar is stuck doing tv punditry.

What's wrong with Lineker doing punditry? He's far from poor!

He is a crunchy nut doing those crisp ads though!

Sarcasm mate.
Linekar pretty much as the dream job.
Gets paid a fortune for watching and discussing football.
Who'd be a manager?

Why do we seem to make the assumption that talented experienced players make good coaches. Especially British players who on the whole have been brought up to run around a lot and not worry that much about technique. Yes some will, but then again some very inexperienced players who were very average will also make good coaches.

This! Spot on, couldn't have said it better

A lot of really good players don't seem to make good managers. Obviously there are exceptions like Jaap Stam !!

Can't remember who it was, perhaps Roy Keane, who couldn't work with palyers that were not as good as he was. Man management not one of his strengths !. Not many British managers in the Premier league, but the likes of, Pardew, Howe, Dyche, Moyes and Pullis were not exactly great players.

There's certainly a 'fast-track' method of acquiring the qualifications required! Has been known to irk some of those battling their way through the system the 'normal' way!
