Was out for a round yesterday (second time on a golf course)

and gentleman on a parallel fairway gave a round of applause at my shot (and as a beginner I am still having less good shots than bad)

it was such a lovely feeling and so so encouraging (as well as making me go bright red)

having joined a tennis club before and played in the womans nights, one of the woman spent every thursday serving straight at me full tilt and half the other woman just ignore me.

I can only say that golf seems to be a sport of true gentlemen and woman and that it's so lovely to be around nice people who love to encourage and help you to play better.

Lucky you, golfwoman, long may it continue, though not sure what your point is. As an ex-tennis player I think there's a lot more 'segregation' in golf than in tennis. Where's the golf equivalent of a tennis club night? I've had some great mixed doubles where men and women gave me loads of encouragement.
On the competetive front, I haven't had the pleasure of being in a ladies' golf comp, but guess women will compete as fiercely as men in any sport, and in any club there can be cliquiness (either sex or both). Good feeling to get the cheer - I've been there myself, but remember those spectators weren't your opponents!
BTW yesterday,I took 2 men to the cleaners (one higher than me, one lower), so am feeling quite smug right now!
Will also say that this forum is a model of equality and always a good place to be. But some other golfing venues still has some way to go.

I know our womens section is fiercly competitive and that there are several good golfers all vying to be top dog golfing wise. Not sure it has come to blood on the handbags yet but I know there is often an edge in the area the women use if there has been a big competition on.

That said the club organises a number of 9 hole social scrambles during the year and these are always mixed and great fun. We also have the Royal Ascot Cup where men and women hold their own qualifying competition and the top 8 from both events go into a matchplay knockout (I belive it is a random draw and not one man v one woman though having never threatened to qualify I tend not to look too closely).

The women are also really good about letting quicker matches and SOLO golfers through and will often add words of encouragement if you hit a good shot as you pass through.

I joined a tennis club as a kid (my mother pushed me into it) and hated it. The lessons were ok but on court I was hopeless and got fed up of not being able to return any half decent serves. I also found the who tennis club thing a lot more cliquey than a golf club.
