At the weekend I was sitting quite nicely, looking at a small handicap cut just needing to par 16-18 to be 1 under nett. A lovely duck hook on 16 led to a lost ball and a double bogey, shattering my hopes. The 17th at my place is a short par 5 with trouble both sides (water left and OOB right) so I play a 3 iron off the tee and try to get just short of the green in 2 with a chance of a birdie.

Of course all thoughts of my plan go out the window when I think to myself, eagle here gets me back, I'll hit my driver and have a go. OOB and another double. Birdie on the last gets me buffer so I pull out the unreliable 3 wood and give it a smack, again not the club I normally play but gives me a chance of birdie, and I pull it to the trees. Bogey to finish, missed buffer, +5 for the last 3 and a meltdown going for it.

Afterwards I had my epiphany, I'll buy a 1 iron. Safe off the tee, long club that lets me get the distance to still reach the green in 2. What's not to love? It may be the hardest club to hit in golf but obviously I'll manage it......

I'm going with genius for now, we'll see how this progresses.....

Genius! Impulse buys normally behave for atleast a fortnight! Just tee it up generously and don't attempt to hit it off the deck. Or it will be making an appearance in the for sale section in roughly 14 days. Enjoy

All makes perfect sense to me. I was about to ebay a club at the weekend and decided to give it one last go. I then proceeded to hit it straight all the way around. Best club in the bag for me on Sunday. Clubs, swings, everything, all very strange.

Always nice to get new shinys!!

The heart prefers this route, but the head says learn course mgt.

I always go for the heart route.

The cheap version is to buy the contact tape pro's put on demo clubs. Never yet hit a bad shot with contact tape on a club.

A club always performs better when they are under threat. Buy a replacement and keep it in the garage, just occasionally bring it out and show it to your bag, the fear will make them perform...

I've decided I have met in the middle. Course management but I don' thave the club for it. Best of both worlds.

I think you are exactly right there. Shot after shot went up the middle, never happened with it before since I tried it in the shop, ha ha. I think I need to threaten some more clubs now.

Are you going for one of those Ping / Titleist driving irons? Look lovely. I'm not good enough to use one, need to be a good ball striker with a long club and that is not me, and your h/c suggests they would be up your street.

I've ordered a mizuno MP H5. Similar to the titleist irons, slightly beefier but same style as my blades. Idea is to replace my 3 wood as I struggle to control the shape of it as well as I do an iron. I have a 3 iron which is the titleist one which I love, this will hopefully push it another 40 yards or so so should replace the 3 wood comfortably. The good thing with American golf right now is you can return a club within 4 weeks if you don't get on with it. Then I'll get a 2 iron or may have to rethink completely.

Keep going with your new found favourite. It's great when that works out.

TBH Jamie, if you want to get down to 3, i would suggest learning to hit the clubs you have;)

i know from personal experience that buying a different club to solve a problem with your game doesn't work... but then again;)

Stop fannying around and get one of theses bad boys

:D

Back OT i have a ping zing 2 "1" iron.

Hit it once and flushed it so i bought it for a fiver from the local bargain bin.

Not flushed it since.

Now sits in my back garden as my practice swing club.

And here I was thinking you were a golfer! You should know lessons and practice are of no use compared to buying a new club!

Next up, a chipper and 85* wedge!
