Gas meter regulations

Possibly one for StuC

Daughter is at Uni in Birmingham in a rented house and has the gas meter in the bottom of her wardrobe in her room.

She has been having headaches and recently called the gas emergency contractors who fixed a significant leak in the meter.

It's an old house and the meter has been there forever,
To my mind it shouldn't be in a bedroom, but the landlord is dragging his feet.

Can someone in the know tell me if he is legal or what

It can be situated wherever, the only regulations are it's got to be away from electrics.

The installation Of The meter is/was by transco/national grid in years gone by. If it wasnt allowed transco would've isolated the installation.

Where Was The leak? On the meter or on the installation?

the leak was in the regulator, the repair guy said that it was bad that the meter was in her bedroom

we have got her a gas detector device, which should provide some peace of mind, but I just wanted to know if we could force the landlord to do something

No electrics in the wardrobe, but obviously stores clothes etc and is only vented through the gap in the door , but isnt on an escape route

A landlord must have a carbon monoxide alarm in the house. Was there not one there?

There is a carbon monoxide alarm, but it doesnt detect natural gas

hence the alarm we supplied

Shouldn't there be an annual gas safety inspection? I have a guy coming every year checking boiler, flu and hob. He opens the cupboard (on hallway outside flat) where the meter is, so I guess he checks that as well.

Frag, I guess the house been converted to a "multi occupancy" and the chances are The existing lounge has been made into a bedroom. The most you can expect the landlord to do is to cover the cost Of The gas detector.

It probably has been done but the leak was in the regulator doing into the meter, of which your gas transporter is responsible for, after the meter is the landlords responsibility.

There's a good chance the regulator has sprung the leak especially if it's an old one. These things happen unfortunately.
