Gary Player - buffoon or crusader

Reading about Gary Players drugs in golf revelation. Personally I think its unfounded and irrelevant and he's just jealous that the modern players can hit it far further than him. He craves attention from the media and knows he wont get it from his golf. Golfers are athletes nowadays
(except for sports bra Monty) and spend more time in the gym than on the range. A low carb high protein diet is not cheating, creatine is not illegal either.
He's a sad little man who should have stopped wasting time playing in Opens a long time ago. We dont care how old he is or how many sit ups he can do.
Funny he waits until the biggest tournament of the year to make his claim - the man needs shutting up. Grrrr.

Kind of agree with this, except creatine should be banned, as it is in most sports. Not sure Tiger could be that big without it.

Player has a point-without testing we cannot know that some golfers are not taking some substances to enhance performance. Not all enhancers are for building excessive muscle--Betablockers are a aid in reducing your heart beat therefore keeping you calm in moments of high anxiety i.e. a three foot putt for a major.

Testing should be introduced as soon as possible.

The BBC showed the press conference this morning where Player said that he knew of at least 10 players who use banned substances. The thing is , the R&A are already introducing random testing so I don't know why he had to go and say what he said.

In my opinion, Gary Player should just shut up and retire.

As Ernie Els said in an interview at the Open, golfers could take performance-enhacing drugs but they won't help them chip it dead from 30 yds or sink all their 6 foot putts. This is what really matters, not an extra drug-enhanced 20 yds off the tee.

Good point. How exactly are the authorities going to decide upon which drugs enhance your SCORE ? Any idiot with a basic swing and muscles can hit a driver a mile but can't put a round together.

If there's a drug which will help you pitch it dead over a bunker from a downhill slope and 5 yards of green to work with...can I have some? Betablockers won't help if you're crap.

I think drug testing in golf is a good idea in prinipal but it would be a nightmare to administrate and adjudicate upon in practice.

In short..shut up Gary...and stop ruining the reputation of the sport which made you rich and famous.

And Bah Humbug

I'm pleased that all the top golfers interviewed agree with comments that I made on the subject back in December. They don't believe there are any drugs that will 'enhance the performance' of a golfer. The R&A are going ahead with it simply because they think that they have to show that the sport is 'clean,' not because they expect anyone to get an advantage from drugs.

I'd ike to know at what stage are these random tests to be carried out? Are we going to see the Claret Jug presented, and the tearful speech of thanks made, only to find that it's all going to be taken away because of a failed drug test. Perhaps they intend to test every qualifier for the open before they tee-off. Of course it will have to be done every day of the tournament, because someone could 'cheat' between rounds. It's very likely that there will be many failures of the random tests, mainly becaouse of ignorance on the part of the players. Also, how long do they intend to ban those found to be dilinquent? In Atheletics it's tantamount to 'goodbye, and don't come back.'

Someone at some time has got to think this through.
