Morning all,
I am looking at getting gps , young fish has helped me out in regards to the pros/ cons of the aire 11, Bt at home has helped with the golf buddy.

What i am now after is good and bad points of garmin g6 please. How have people found the quickest in course updates ?

Hopefully with all the above info i will then go and get one.

I had a G6 for a while. It's a great bit of kit, my main problem was that I kept forgetting to charge it. it does have lot of features but I found I only really used the front/middle and back distances.

although the lay up stuff etc would be useful at a course other than home.

What do you mean by this, do you mean if a course like Leamington & County Golf who have just informed me last week that they are changing the order of there course and putting some completely new holes in with a new course card to start on the 13th July, when will it will be updated? my answer is, SkyCaddie will be immediate in line with that date as I'll walk it in the next week accordingly, no other GPS brand can give a date as they have no direct control on it and it will only become updated when the third party decides to update their aerial imagery, could be weeks, months or even years, who knows :mmm:
 
I have a g6 mate , love it , easy to use , great views of holes & touch screen ,
Take it out of bag switch it on & leave it for a min or 2 and the course is up and ready to go
Has features for keeping scores etc , i dont bother with that at al tho

i leave the charger plugged in beside my trolley battery charger to remind me to charge it

No negatives that i have found

Mate,

I know SkyCaddie do it fast, thats why I did not ask about how quick they did it mate. I just did not know about the speed of the other companies mate.

Just read my first reply, mate , meant to say how quick were the other companies in when you requested a update to when it happened.

Not an on course GPS, but changes to order of the course can be as little as 24hrs, I played a Course near me using Game Golf and when it came to uploading the course, the card did not correspond with the layout they had published, emailed them with a scan of the Scorecard and within 24hrs they had updated their system.
Don't see why why others couldn't do it quickly once they have the correct information, it wouldn't need new satellite imagery to correct the order of holes.
 
Off topic a bit but if you can, borrow a GPS for a round or 2. I did and I realised how few of the features I actually used and would have wasted money on the Golfbuddy watch I was looking at. The Bushnell Neo Ghost did all I wanted for under £100
 
Ive got a g6 and really like it as I play a lot of new places all around uk, spain and middle esst as its always good to go I looked at a touch but found it a bit clunky.....but to ber fair its got a lot more facilities on it and useful if you use them.
 
I've a G6. I think it's brilliant. No idea how fast it updates course changes, but I've not played anywhere it's out of date yet. Simple to use, battery life fine, I use a tee on the touchscreen if looking at a hazard distance, as I find it a bit easier than my stubby finger. I got mine off Amazon for £125 and I think that was a really good price.

There's a big difference to just administratively changing the order of the holes and putting complete new holes in as Leamington are currently doing along with a handful of other courses in my Midlands area, also new ditches, new and moved or reshaped bunkers, new greens, water hazards, all things that could cost you dearly with an out of date GPS and you will never know when it will be updated as the GPS brand has no control on that what so ever so they can't tell you either!

Region3 has informed me of a new ditch at Beedles lake, I ordered the file from America last week, it has now arrived, I'll boot it up into my satellite backpack and I'll update it next week early morning for the Skycaddie members to update which will take around 5-7 days, I can be informed of a change, order my software and walk that course and have it all updated for all Skycaddie members all within 2-3wks, nobody else can put a time frame on it, nobody!

That's why I only mentioned the course order and nothing else, You know I rate Skycaddie as the best on course brand for accuracy of information, but even you's don't produce the imagery😜

I completely forgot when I was trying to think of any other changes, but I know we've requested that our par 3 course be mapped for the first time and it hasn't been yet as far as I know.
 
In today's i newspaper we have 'The 10 best... Golf GPS units'

The Garmin Approach G8 as £329.99 gets a good write up. I am a little bit interested that it adjusts for uphill and downhill shots - what's it adjusting? Even more interesting is that it suggests a club. On what basis I wonder. Is this straying a bit away from these devices providing purely factual information?

Isnt the G8 illegal in comp play still ?
 
I see people using phones in every comp now, I don't bother to ask if they are legal or not as it's now more hassle than it's worth

Yep, because it measures slope it can't be used in comp play. Always amazes me that in reviews (including when GM did it) more isn't made about the fact that they cannot be used in competition play

I thought it was in GM that I read about it being illegal,(only mag I read TBH ) they do a + and - in their reviews and it was under the - part , could be wrong tho
