Any of you guys got one of these, and if so, do you recommend it? Although it is the base model, it seems to get very good reviews. And yes, I do roughly know how far I hit each club. Any comments would be appreciated before I fork out 119 sods.

£119? Last time I looked they were £90. I've got one, there brilliant. The more you play the same course the less you use it though, with getting used to the yardages. Mine sometimes takes a while to load a new course, other than that, get yourself price comparising

Hi I don't have the S1 but do have a S3 , it's a great but of kit and I have used around the uk and in a Florida!

nit sure there is much difference in price now as there is a new one out now (s4)

I have the S4, think there are a few differences including scorecard and greenview on the S4, however these are a bit of a fiddle to use. The screen, battery life and number of courses held on the S4 are better but all are "nice to haves" but definitely not a must. To me the most useful function is distance to back, middle and front and the ability to measure shot distance... The S1 has both of these so to me you can't go too far wrong given the price of the S1...

I have the S3 although started out with the S1. As mentioned above the additional bits and bobs on the S3/S4 are nice but I generally use it for the bog standard front/middle/back type thing.

The one big issue I had with the S1 was getting it to charge was a complete pain and I lost count of the number of times I'd get up in the morning to find it hadn't charged as I hadn't lined it up exactly right.

The new charging system on the later models was the biggest plus for me!

Have had the Garmin S1 for about a year and have found it to be great for giving the information that I need. Yes it only measures to front, middle and back, whilst the more expensive models give more details. Distances given seem to be fine.
Like road2ruin, I have found in recent months that when charging, I might have to try a few times to get "pins" in place and to check that the charging has started.
Was a gift, but I believe was £119 back in 2012. Should be able to get under £100 now that newer versions have been released.

You are the copper from 'allo allo' and I claim my £5!

I have the S1. Basic compared to newer models, but perfect for my needs. One of the best pieces of golfing kit i've ever bought.

I'd agree with that save for one caveat; battery life. Only get about 8 hours out of it, so in 36 hole away days you might end up guessing over the last 6 or so. If that's not an issue then highly recommended.

Yup got the S1. Simple, but then that's me.

Just got back from LaManga Spain: three courses, it picked them up straight away. The big upside was having distances in yards and not having to translate the 150metre posts etc. to yards.
A great piece of kit.

I was bought an S1 for christmas by a family member. yes, it does exactly what it says it will. It cost £90.
However I only use it for practice. For comps I use the £1.27p Skydroid app on my phone, much more course info!!

Yes, I believe under the 1st January 2014 ammendments it is.

The amendment to Decision 14-3/4 permits the use of a compass during a round. More importantly, it clears the way for players to use an iPhone with a distance measuring application, providing a Local Rule permits the use of distance measuring devices. Previously, the presence of an inbuilt compass that could not be deleted from a smart phone meant that they could not be used for this purpose
