Been looking at buying the garmin s3 watch but just found this while searching for under 90 quid and thought it was worth sharing on here.

Question is do I get this or the s3 watch, money isn't a factor on this occasion. All I really want something to tell me distance I'm hitting clubs when practising and just distance to the green/hazards when playing.

The G3 for that price is very good value.

I was interested in getting a G3 but ended up with a G5 as I found the G3 screen too small.

You will certainly get much more info. on the G3 which is very helpful when you want to know distances to hazards (or to carry one).

I have the S3 and I love it, I'm not going to try and sell it to you so its up to you, is the G3 a handheld? If so its which type of device you prefer really... Wrist or pocket?

I've got a G3 and that price is a bargain and it is a cracking bit of kit the only downside is unlike the watches its not rechargeable so you will need some rechargeable batteries to but at that price get some an still under a hundred quid for a good dmd

Tesco direct also have the G3 at £88 and if you are a new customer, you can get £10 off using the code TDX-9KJ6. If you have clubcard points, you can double the value of them with clubcard exchange, but I'm not sure you can use both offers together.

Have you considered the G5? The display is larger and higher resolution and it keeps more stats like FIR, GIR and total putts. It's fairly bulky, but mine is attached to my bag with the supplied carabinier. It's available for £159 from a few places as it has been superseded by the G6.

I know a few people who have the S3 and love it, but it's quite a bit dearer than the G3 or G5.

Remember the S3 allows for personal hazards etc to be saved 5 per hole, i.e bunkers, trees, water etc

You add them while playing, more suitable if you play the same course each time which I do

Seems like decent value
But have you considered the golf buddy voice plus, i bought one a few weeks ago and its amazing, No fuss, comes with watch strap, you can mute the sound, so far its recognized the course and every hole.
Its costly but i found it to be worth it

Thanks for the replies.

I liked the idea of the watch as I've tried the Gps apps on my phone and found it a bit of a pain but also a little self conscious been a high handicapper checking distance to the green and then topping the ball. At this point I will point out not in competitions.

Can you track your shots with the G3 & g5? I really want something that I can take down the practice range which is basically a field and mark different distances while I'm there if that makes sense.

I've seen the golf buddy and although it doesn't normally bother me I justddon't like the look of it for the images I've seen.

The Skycaddie watch looks good but have struggled to find any reviews for it.

i always wear a watch so i decided to go for the g3 approach, if i did not wear a watch i would have got the garmin watch.

I've got the G3, it's a great piece of kit. Cant fault it really.

If I didnt have it, I would kinda fancy the watch though, a few at my club have the watches and really like them.

I got the S3 for Crimbo off Mrs JBS much to my surprise. So simple to use touch screen, has found every course I have been on home or abroad within a minute. Certainly is easy strolling upto your ball quick look distance and weapon choice confirmed. The Boss is always returning to the side of his bag to put his handheld device back.
Fully charged battery works 8 weeks in just watch mode, you can power it down, on the course on the 2 society days it has been on where we play 36 holes it has just run out of puff on hole 35. But then everyone I have played with is curious about it and wants to measure their booming drives, which probably doesn't help the battery use.
Being numerally dyslexic playing in Europe spins my swede doing the maths for club choice, and being a watch is so easy and unobtrusive. Only downside just confirm the hole you are on is shown on the display as crossing other holes sometimes gets it in a pickle
