I am looking at changing my irons and have been custom fit for a set that is 2 clubs longer than my current set. The new irons are lovely, but they are creating 2 problems:

Problem 1:
My existing PW (MP53) goes about 120 yards and my gap wedge (50 degre Vokey) goes about 107. That gap is great, now that gap looks like changing to 33 yards which means an additional club. The new set (Srixon Z545) doesnt have an 'approach' wedge so the only thing I can think of is to get another vokey 46 degree wedge. Right?
I would have preferred having a cavity back 'pitching wedge', but I dont fancy getting another wedge into the mix .e.g Cleveland RTX 2 cavity back. Any other ideas?

Problem 2:
At the top end of the bag, the 5 iron is going to be the same distance as my 3 hybrid. Doesnt seem to be any point in having that, so thinking of getting rid of my 3 hybrid and getting a 2 hybrid.

Any advice or thoughts would be appreciated

Cheers,
GS

2h could be much more tricky to get airborne than a 3 h so definitely try before you buy and don't rule out a 5 wood either.
As for the bottom end - well, this is just going to get more and more common.
What degree is the Srixon PW...?
If you have a 33 yard gap then the 46° does sound like a viable option.

2 clubs longer.....?

How far is the new 5iron going?

If the old 7 iron was around the 140 mark lets say then the new 7 iron is going around 160..

So the old 5 iron would go 160, now 180.

Am I right?

In the end the number on the bottom means little, its hitting the ball roughly the same distance and with predictable ball flight/dispersion so you can aim at and hit close to pins that is.

3hybrid , is that a 19 degree hybrid? there is no way a 5iron is going that far surely?

Maybe I need to upgrade to these new distance bats.

I am a cynic with the distances of clubs, but I compared it to my existing club and that checked out
My current 6 iron goes 174 total on average, the ap1 was 1 club longer and the srixon was 2 clubs longer. Average was 203 yards, a couple went over 210, but they were Sunday bests.

Anyhow, the problem is that my vokeys don't go as far as my mp 53's, might be the cavity backs. But I am thinking that perhaps I need to change from 50/54/58 with my wedges to 46/52/58. A lot of clubs to change in 1 go, didn't need to change my wedges. This could get expensive

In terms of the 2 hybrid vs 4 iron, I do like having a hybrid in the bag, it's quite versatile getting out of the dark places I find myself off the tee. I find the hybrid easier than a fairway for those recovery shots especially

Genius! Never thought of that. I was thinking about keeping my existing set as a backup.

:D glad to help. Don't let that stop you buying a new vokey though, they are very nice.

Have you considered a set which don't have such strong lofts, which I assume has contributed significantly to the extra difference, and new 'gap'.

What I would do is get these clubs then go out onto the practice ground and check the distances. When I got fitted for my clubs I was supposedly averaging 194 with my 6i, back to the real world it goes 185ish, so 10 yards shorter. Not doubting you can give the ball a good whack, but I'm always slightly dubious about claimed iron distances on a flightscope etc.

don't rush out and do anything daft, get the clubs and try them out first.

The lofts are 2 degrees stronger, which obviously helps with the distance. There is also a big enough cavity to fit a spare tyre in which also helps! I asked the fitter if I could buy another PW and have its loft adjusted by 4 degrees to 48 and he said they could only change it by 2 degrees, after that the shape of the head wouldnt be right in terms of characteristics (leading edge, etc...)

I am changing because I need more forgiveness primarily, I often dont hit the sweet spot and my clubs punish me on those strikes. The distance is just a bonus. These irons for me were the most forgiving on my bad strikes.

MadAdey, I will order the set and the fitter is going to check my yardages on GC2, I will also check them at the range and confirm. Once that has been done I will need to make a call on what gap there is and how it can be filled.

Thanks for the help everyone

It is a bit ridiculous how strong those lofts are, can't believe they do not offer a GW for this set. But there is a really good option that Cleveland have got. They do the 588 in a CB model so you still get the benefits on off centre hits but with the great feel of a Cleveland wedge. They do them in plenty of loft options too.

I know you said you did not want to stick something like that in, but get it in the 48* & 52* variants and the bottom end of the bag would look nice. Drop in the 4i and the Z U45 3H you would have seriously nice set of clubs. Infact change it to the Z745 and I'm feeling jealous at how good it would probably be.

Everytime I read forum posts about distance I wonder if there is something wrong with me or my clubs.

I used to hit a 7 iron 140, now I have more width in my swing its about 150. I it a PW 120 yards and thats it... My 52 is 100 and my SW 80.

For all the gaps I hit 1/2 or 3/4 clubs. I have no real need to hit a 7 iron 160 right?

Not unless your 6 iron is tired

I gave it a bath last night and it had a good nights sleep so it should be OK.

I was surprised how much distance I gained just by improving my swing technique, mainly the width at takeaway and maintaining that width.

It must have added a foot to my club length!
