Hi am looking at buying a wedge to help me with short game which is very hot or miss at mo. Just after bit of advice best loft for a high handicapper & some pointers at which club to get. Don't mind 2nd hand just anything to help me out!
Thanks. Jay.

First question - what is your current wedge set up ? - Do you have a Sand Wedge for example or anything after the PW

2nd Question - which areas of the short game are you looking at ?

1. The chips and pitches around the green - what club do you currently use

2. The 60 - 30 yard pitches - again what club do you use

3. Bunker shots ?

Which areas do you have an issue with and what exactly are the bad shots ?

Whats the lofts of your current wedges. Your sig says you have a PW (I've no idea what loft that one is) but what others do you have that have created this 'gap'

Or

What shot is it that you feel you need this gap wedge for

Don't go higher than a 56 degree loft and look for a high bounce option:thup:

High bounce might be right for some people, but completely wrong for others - like me!

@OP
Need a bit more info to make anything other than a guess - and a Pro is likely to be your best source of recommendation anyway.

What loft (or model) is the PW? Do you have a Sand Wedge? Do you use the Sand Wedge for chipping? Is it successful?

But what problems are you having with chipping/short pitches? Do you thin the ball a lot? Do you hit lots of fat shots? Do you normlly take big divots, merely brush/bruise the grass or somewhere in between? What sort of turf do you normally play - hard close cut links style? or lush parkland fairways where the ball sits up?

Do you find you aren't confident about the particular distances you find yourself? Or merely panic a bit and hit full shots when you really want half ones?

Hi yes I have pw & sw. It's more around the green shots am struggling been using sw around green, with bunker not to bad. 60-30 shots using pw. Was just 1 of friends I play with has a gap wedge & said it might help me out.

How exactly are you struggling ? Thin the shot ? Leaving it Short ?

It seems more a technique issue as opposed to a club - i use a SW for most of my shots around the green but also an 8 iron at times.

Indeed it might. But it might also be a waste of time and money!

So what are the problems that you have around the green? See my earlier post for the questions to answer.

Think I best practice bit more. Leaving it short with the worry of hitting it to hard.

Then that wont be solved by getting a GW - need to get a cleaner crisper strike with confidence

Practice with what you have, the 56* is more than enough, try higher and lower shots with it, be creative, learn what happens when you open/close the face, play it back in your stance, now middle and foward. Learn what happens and what you need to do to make consistent contact. Try full/half and three quarter shots. Do all this and be comfortable with it before you think buying another club will sort out the issues.

Hey there I dont know if some ones said it yet but find out the loft of your PW and then your SW then choose a GW in between the lofts.
My PW is 45 and my SW is 56 so I need something around the 50 and that's what I got.
Bounce wise well I cant really help with that unless I know if your a digger or a sweeper with your wedges

It depends how far you hit a PW and SW. If there's a big gap then a gap may help plug that rather than trying to fire a full out SW all the time or taking a little off the PW. It may also give you another chipping option around the green. As for bounce are you a sweeper or digger. Not cheap but the new vokey range offer an extensive range of bounce options and grinds but why not speak to a pro, get some advice and go from there

the point is there will be a very inconsistent gap at his high h/capper level, so I stick with post #12

I think the OP was struggling more with green side shots than full shots so gapping not the issue, think more practice/ lessons is the answer as a gap wedge not going to massively help with those shots.

Gap wedges wouldn't be necessary if so many manufacturers hadn't jacked down the lofts of their irons from PW downwards, to give the impression that their clubs hit the ball further than their competitors!
