Got me thinking when I saw many pros not using a 52 gap wedge so did a little experiment. It was very simple; I hit a full PW 120 yards, SW just short of 100 yards and inwards so I'm looking at a shot of 110 yards to fill the gap.Played a 3/4 shot with a PW and every shot dropped at 110 yards! Save yer money and carry less clubs around, play a 3/4 with a PW ;).

a 3/4 5 iron for me goes the same as my 7 iron, so should i bin the 7 iron?

For me, my 52 wedge is 2nd in use after my putter, i use it for everything 100 yards in (except bunkers 56, when i need height 60 or a bump and run chip, 7-9 iron)

each to their own, if you are enjoying the flexibility of the PW then happy days! as per everything in golf, one mans hallelujah is another mans uh oh!

Well I find it useful.

Full, 3/4, half
PW 105, 100, 80
GW 95, 85, 75

So there is a gap that it fills. Also prefer it over the PW for most shots around the green - as flight is much higher than the loft difference would indicate

my full 47 degree wedge is around 120. easy wedge is around 105.
my full 52 is around 100. easy gap wedge is around 90.
my full 58 is around 80.

i am most accurate with my gap wedge from 90-95 yards. i am very glad i bought it.

Obviously this will only work if like me the distance fits perfectly for your with a 3/4 PW, like has been said each to his own.Seem to remember a few years back Els just using one wedge(54) after his PW, amazing on the tough courses he played one club did it all from 135 yards in :ooo:

rather more obviously it also relies on the gap between your PW and SW being so small!

my PW goes 118, my SW (56) goes 76 - a 52 that happens to go 91 seems to make a lot of sense to me; I also find it's natural 50/50 chipping carry to roll useful to work with as well.

you're right to raise the point that not everything that seems obvious works for everyone

Fo me its PW from 120 down to about 80 yds, or for bump and run shots. 52 from 80 in, closer if its a dodgy lie. 58 for 50 yds and less, bunkers, and flop shots. Although apparently as a 26 'capper I'm not allowed to play those;)

No you should bin the 3 4 & 5

I've never been into 3/4 shots every time I think about limiting my back swing I duff it, I prefer to think......hit it slower. But I'd say my gw is an essential club, I don't need that many woods.

I don't use the GW a huge amount from the fairway - unless the distance is exactly the GW one. I'm not really capable, these days, of hitting exact distances (I use to be very good with distance, but direction was iffy) so the difference is pretty irrelevant. But it does give me a lot more confidence for those particular distances - and a couple more - and is definitely my go-to club around greens.

I have 4 wedges including the PW, and a 3/4 swing with each one carries about 5yds further than a full swing with the next wedge down.

I just have a bit too much of a gap between PW and SW (30-35yds) to be happy leaving the GW out.

I never hit a 52' wedge full, but use it constantly around the green. It's the first club I pull out of the bag within 10-60yds of the green.

As I'm a sweeper slider - though that may change - the higher bounce on my SW isn't suited to Fairway work for me. Happy enough to use it from rough though.

I never hit any wedge (PW, 52 and 58) at full tilt. I find my 52 useful for those in between distances as well as around the green. Not sure the OP is that accurate in terms of pros not using gap wedges but maybe I'm wrong
