Ive had a gap wedge for around 4 years now but this last 3 or 4 weeks I found myself using it less and less. last two times playing I haven't even put it in the bag.

I found a gap wedge every useful when I first got one. I used it for full shots from around 100 yards. useful for chipping etc.

now, I am just not that fussed and I will just grip down on the pitch wedge or hit it that bit easier!

could this be the end of my 4 wedge set up?:)

I use my gap wedge all the time.

Great for full shots from circa 100 yards. Handy for little knock downs too when I'm between that and my other wedge. useful for chipping as you say too.

Mine won't be leaving my bag for a long, long time.

I use mine a lot. all my green side chips and pitches up to about 80 yds.

As there is often an 8 to 10 degree gap between a Sand Iron and a Pitching Wedge these days, I personally believe that a Gap Wedge is essential. It does what the PW used to do years ago and is about the same loft as then! :)

As with the others, 100 yards and chipping on tight lies round the green with its low bounce... Could be your not using it as much in the thin air and hard ground but you may want it back for options on the winter.

Ive dropped the 60 so three wedge setup most of time. For dry links I'll put it back and drop the 19 degree 5w. The 52/56 perform differently to the PW - they can be opened more & from 100 in I'll use them, unless windy then it's the PW in 80-100 window

I will use it even less with the low bounce in winter! I had toyed with the idea of a high bounce gap but leaving it out seemed like a better idea.

kind of, out of sight out of mind. I've never had so many head covers in my bag as I do at the minute!

I had PW 52* and 56*

Dumped the 52* 2 weeks ago, I can manufacture any shot I need from a PW and 56*...........like the good old days, and it's more fun:thup:

If your not using it and have filled the game its end of an era I guess. What fills its spot?

still completely undecided. having trouble with my 22 deg hybrid at the minute. I cant hit it out of my way. I replaced it with a really old mizuno silver cup 5 wood. goes around 190 and just likes to get up nice and high.

I also have a 4 iron in the bag for the first time in a long time!

bag currently sits at..

driver
4 wood
19 hybrid
5 wood
4i-pw
sw
lob
putter

What exactly is a gap wedge these days anyway? With all the loft and bounce options on wedges there really is no such thing as a sand wedge or even a PW, just wedges with different loft\bounce combinations.

For example, you have 4 wedges, does that mean that two of them are gap wedges

52* wedge works perfectly between the PW (45*) and 56* for me. Gives me the 100-110 yards nicely.

That said, it doesn't get a lot of use as more often than not I'm hitting from 80-90 or 110-120. Just don't put myself into the 100 yard range very often, not intentionally, it's just the way my distances seem to work out. My 56* gets the most wedge use and I'm pretty comfortable with it.

Your right, they are all just wedges but in my mind I have a PW, GW, SW, LW.... but who cares what they are called.

OP sounds like a reasonable setup... I cant make use of that many long clubs so the extra wedge is nice but its all a matter of what works... as you know better than me.

It's all just a big numbers game now isn't it. 4i is now really a 3i right up to the PW now having 9i loft so essentially, people are still carrying 3 wedges in old money.

I'm changing my wedges around soon enough, gonna go for a 54º & 58º along with my 47º Pitching wedge

Really though, a 54º isn't a gap wedge or a sand wedge really, is it?
