As we can see from a few recent threads, not all golfers know all the rules.
Does anyone use any obscure rules to wind up an opponent?
For example,

marking the ball on the green in front of the ball with a beer can or

purposely knocking down little leaves on a practice swing under a bush or

taking a carry bag into a bunker and dropping it onto the sand or

pretending to trip over climbing down into a bunker and sticking your sandwedge in the sand to prevent you falling over or

standing outside the tee markers with one foot in front of said tee marker when about to hit a tee shot (ball inside tee markers)

and has been mentioned already, having a practice putt or chip after the hole is finished.

Of course, you may know many many more :)

In a friendly 4bbb game, once or twice, I have stacked up a whole pile of coins as a ball marker when its likely that I am going to be asked to re mark away from the opponents line

I would never do anything like that in a serious game!

Chris

No gamesmanship of any kind here, other than a bit of banter in a friendly game. I think it's sad if you need tactics like that.

If my game's not good enough on the day, fine.

Ive heard Justone complaining before that whenever he plays Smiffy, Smiffy plays crap in order to try and drag James down to his level :D

Bob, I thought as long as the ball was in the tee box, you could stand anywhere you wish,

Think that's the point; wait for your opponent to try to pull you on it and then point him in the direction of the rule ;)

I am not a big fan of gamesmanship in golf I used to use it a lot when playing rugby and especially cricket to wind up the opposition batsman. I think it was the team mentality that made it ok and just copying the aussies really. In golf it is far more one to one and a social aspect as you usually have a beer with the guy afterwards. I could not look him in the eye if I had made him play worse by underhand tactics. My old boss was a prick used to play sometimes and if I was winning he used to try and wind me up. Once he ripped open a snickers bar at the top of my back swing and I promptly topped the ball. I was so mad my swing got faster my game fell apart and he took the game. I never played him again though and I am still waiting to hit the same rhythm I had that day. I did learn a valuable lesson about tension and anger ruining my swing though.

It very much depends who I am playing with.

For example on Friday I played with a good buddy and we were winding each other up all the way around, all in a good spirit and it was very much to and fro. On the 17th I out drove him by 58 yards and kept telling so !! On one hole he said to me "remember the last time we played this hole together and you topped your 2nd shot "

I think stuff like that is fine with a friend you know well and you can both give and take.

Would never do it in a comp or with soeone I did not know extremely well.

never resulted in gamesmanship of any sorts other than yesterday, playing the quarter finals of our knock outs i had to give teh guy 1 shot.

So standing on the 11th S1 one i casually say, " this is the only shot your getting so use it wisely " he then proceeded to snap-hook one left into the woods on a dogleg right, had to take a drop out as it was unplayable, the drop landed nasty, chip out, pitch through the green so chipped back on and putted out for a 7....

does that make me a bad person.

PS in my defense we play alot together and he was ribbing me the hole round about my driving

I take it these are all "ok" then??

That's exactly the thing my mates would do to me.
