Can I ask opinion on which set of clubs are best for game improvment, I have heard good things about JXP800's and G10/15's but wondered what the thought from the forum was?
Wilson Di7's and Di11's are supposed to be great for mid high?

The best club is the one that works for you. Doesn't matter if it is this years make or one that is five years old. Plenty of great so called GI clubs but I like the Ping range (G20 etc) and the Cally X rage (X14-X20). It is hard with older models to try before you buy but hit as many as you can and see where it takes you
Perhaps I have too much of a suspicious nature but can anybody recommend somewhere truly independent where you can try and test clubs from a few manufacturers' before buying?

I don't believe such a place exists!
The likes of Pacesham, Precision etc will still have some sort of positive or negative incentive to stock and sell brands - even just because of the relationship they have with the company - and to stock every company's products is not economic. So decisions have to be made. For example, from memory, Homer mentioned that Pacesham didn't stock Callaway gear.
And if you want such independence, it's highly likely that you ill have to pay for that priviledge.
As a classic procrastinator Male, I tended to visit sufficient outlets to work out what I wanted. But, typically, almost all of my Golf Club purchases have actually been made 'blind'!
@Harry. Worth noting that this is virtually the end of the season. Second Hand clubs should reduce markedly in price in the next month. There may also be some end-of-line deals available for new ones as well, so worth researching but keeping the wallet closed. If merchants get pushy, simply state what you are doing. If they can't accept that, then they don't deserve your custom - state that as well.
There are places like the Belfry fitting centre that will charge you something like £50 for a fitting session and deduct it from the product you purchase.

Sounds alright that, is there a catch? (suspicious nature). Do you have to buy your clubs from them? What do you get for £50? Is it an hourly rate or a specific number of clubs?
You get a fittng session where you try various clubs. If you don't buy anything you lose your £50.
There are Independants who do the same.
In Newcastle, Philips Golf offer a fitting service for £35 but are very competitively priced on their gear aswell. You agree to pay £35 before you start, spend a lot of time playing on top of the range computerised visual testers, have a chat with the pro, narrow it down and play some more. If you buy then happy days you got the right product, if not you pay £35
